Brian Kevin Wernham FBCS FAPM CEng CITP, born 1961 (age 62–63) is a British politician, engineer, and project management author. He has served as a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Stanwix Urban ward on Cumberland Council since 2022, and is the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Carlisle for the next United Kingdom general election..[1]

Early life and education edit

Wernham was born on in 1961 in Hampton, Middlesex, England. He was educated at Latymer Upper School, at the time an independent direct grant grammar school in London.[2] He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Surrey graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. He then started work but undertook an MBA at was then called Henley Management College part-time. Later, he studied African History part time at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) graduating with a MA degree from the University of London in 2014. His thesis was titled "Riot! The Nature and Context of Violence in the Bukedi Disturbances of January 1960".[3]

Having studied at the University of Surrey, Wernham worked as an engineer at British Aerospace building Harrier Jump Jets (1979 - 1981) and then as an consultant IT engineer. He authored and edited several project management best practice guides for the Association for Project Management[4] and wrote a text book on Agile Project Management.[5] As an expert on project management was quoted in the press[6] and interviewed on national radio and TV news.[7] He was an audit manager at the National Audit Office producing reports for the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee[8]. He was a Trustee Director of the Association for Project Management between 2014 and 2019[9]

Political career edit

Wernham won the local election to be the sole councillor for the Stanwix Urban Ward in the 2022 Cumberland Council election for the new Cumberland unitary authority, with 1,472 votes as the Liberal Democrat candidate - the highest number of votes in any of the 46 wards.[10] The ward had been Conservative for at least 49 years.[11] He has been selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for Carlisle for the Liberal Democrats in the 2024 General Election.[12][13]
