Borland Genetics is an online service for genetic genealogy hobbyists, allowing users to analyze and compare autosomal DNA data files from different testing companies, and use the raw data files of the living to reconstruct DNA kits for deceased ancestors of the users, which are then submitted for matching as if the deceased individuals had tested during their lifetime.

History

edit

Borland Genetics was founded in 2018 by Kevin Borland, an MIT graduate with degrees in Physics and Law, who began developing genetic genealogy algorithms in 2013. Originally a suite of desktop tools, the current popular website was launched in October 2019 and debuted at RootsTech in London, England. Borland Genetics, which has since incorporated as Borland Genetics, Inc., is headquartered in rural Kenansville, Osceola County, Florida. The current board of directors consists of founder/CEO Kevin Borland, Richard Norton (retired Johnson & Johnson discovery scientist), and John Jannotti (professor of Computer Science at Brown University; founder of Foodler online food ordering service).

Emphasis on DNA Reconstruction

edit

While other third-party autosomal DNA databases focus on tasks such as determining ethnic background, finding relatives, solving adoption and/or law enforcement cases, and discovering medical traits, Borland Genetics focuses specifically on mathematical DNA reconstruction. Users select from a variety of tools the site offers, each of which employs some combination of DNA phasing, chromosome mapping, raw data segment extraction, and merger of individual component DNA resources. Examples of some of the tools unique to Borland Genetics include the ability to "reverse phase" a parent's DNA using the DNA of his or her child, and automated visual phasing projects that provide as output not just chromosome maps but also actual DNA kits representing each of the siblings' grandparents. The site's flagship tool is the Creeper, an AI assistant that walks users through DNA reconstruction workflows unique to the user's DNA resources and goals, providing written and vocalized instructions.

Community Involvement

edit

Borland Genetics regularly sponsors genealogy conferences and other events within the genealogy community. In particular, the company is an annual sponsor of the Ohio Genealogy Society conference, as Borland's paternal grandfather was a resident of the state of Ohio and a descendant of many of its pioneer families.
