Birdo Space is an independently-owned art gallery based in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
Opened in 2006 in the city’s Minatomachi district, the space is part of an ongoing art and culture project called Birdo Flugas. It was launched by Aya Takada, a Shiogama-based art curator.
As a platform for emerging artists, the gallery has been known as a space for them to not only showcase their work but also connect with the local art and culture community in the Shiogama area and surrounding areas on Miyagi’s urban Matsushima coast. The space aims to support and nurture Shiogama’s flourishing art and culture scene.
Background edit
The name takes its form from the Esperanto language expression, “Birdo Flugas,” which means “Look! Birds are flying.” According to the gallery’s profile, Takada sees aspiring artists and creative professionals like birds soaring amongst the clear skies, in which they can spread their wings and fly freely. As per this expression, Birdo Flugas aims to become a launchpad of sorts for such artists, as the flying birds symbolize hope.
According to Takada, Birdo Flugas aims to foster the talent of emerging artists, focusing on building conversations and connections in places where unique art scenes are born, as opposed to following current trends in Japan’s contemporary art scene.
Takada’s approach to art and culture has long been influenced by her experience engaging with local art scenes in Canada, especially in Vancouver, in which she spent her formative years in university.
Access and Admission edit
The gallery is open on selected days when an exhibit is ongoing. Open hours are from 11:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday (and on Japanese national holidays). Admission is generally free with the exception of special events held at the gallery or at nearby art and culture spaces in Shiogama such as the Shiogama Sugimura Jun Museum of Art or Honda Artist Workshop.
The gallery can be accessed from the following modes of transportation:
- From Hon-Shiogama Station (JR East Senseki Line) - 10 min walk
- From Shiogama Station (JR East Tohoku Line) - 25 min walk
- National Highway Route 45 - 25 to 35 minutes from downtown Sendai
