edit2018 season
editOn December 4, 2017, Back was named the head coach of the Carolina Cobras that played in the National Arena League (NAL) for their inaugural season.[1] In their first game, Back coached quarterback Charles McCullum to a 41–38 loss to the Jacksonville Sharks. The first touchdown in team history came on a McCullum pass to Phillip Barnett.[2] In Week 2, the Cobras earned their first ever win in a 56–42 victory over the Maine Mammoths.[3] In Week 5, the Cobras dismantled the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, 65–3.[4] Later in the season, they would beat the Steelhawks, again, 78–9.[5] The Cobras finished the season 10–5 and earned the second seed in the NAL playoffs. They would face the Sharks and defeat them, 73–48, to move on to the 2018 NAL Championship Game.[6] On August 23, it was announced that Pasquale Vacchio, Michael Green, Craig Peterson, Toni Pulu, Tyron Laughinghouse, Jordan Jolly, and Omari Manhertz all won All-NAL honors.[7][8] Peterson also won NAL Special Teams Kicker of the Year.[9] In the title game, the Cobras crushed the Columbus Lions, 66–8, on the heels of a 37–2 halftime lead. McCollum won the game's MVP award.[10]
2019 season
editHe was again named the head coach of the Cobras in 2019.[11] They started their season beating the Massachusetts Pirates, 54–22.[12] After starting the season 3–0, their first loss came against Sharks, 35–24.[13] Halfway through the season, the Cobras sat at 5–2 and second in the NAL.[14] During the Cobras sixth win against the New York Streets, Back won his 100th overall game including playoffs.[15] The Cobras finished the season 9–5 and would host the Pirates in the playoffs. They would win the game, 30–26, clinching a spot in the 2019 NAL Championship Game.[16] On August 14, DaShawn Johnson, Von Pearson, Cedric Poole, Micah Robinson, Steve Miller, Dante Holmes, and Pasquale Vacchio were named Second-Team All-NAL as well as Charles McCullum, Jordan Jolly, Michael Green, and Bill Vavau being named to the First-Team.[17][18] On August 16, wide receiver Jordan Jolly was named NAL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.[19] In the Championship Game, McCullum finished with six touchdowns to two interceptions while being sacked seven times in the 52–48 loss.[20] On September 23, the Cobras accepted Back's resignation to leave the team before the 2020 season.[21]
