Bestiary is an upcoming 2024 independent psychological drama arthouse film directed by Julio Rionaldo and produced by Parcstar Assembly Inc., an emerging indie motion picture company based in the United States and Indonesia.[1] Bestiary delves into the psychological unraveling of an aspiring actor who becomes consumed by the dark role he is cast in, leading to a tragic merging of his reality and disturbed psyche.[2]

Plot

edit

Bestiary follows Reyes, an office worker with dreams of becoming an actor. Defying the wishes of his wife, who fears for their financial security, Reyes accepts a rare opportunity to play the antagonist monster in a feature film helmed by a renowned and ruthless film director. As Reyes immerses himself in the role of the monster, the pressures of the film industry and the director's manipulative demands start to erode his mental stability. The director, who relentlessly pushes Reyes to his limits, gradually becomes another facet of Reyes's fractured mind. The film explores Reyes's tragic descent into insanity as he struggles to choose between pursuing his passion and maintaining a stable, ordinary life.[3]

Development

edit

The original concept for Bestiary was first pitched at the 2022 Marché du Film at the Festival de Cannes. The project quickly gained traction, particularly in Indonesia, where it leveraged social media platforms to attract emerging talent eager to participate in this unique and ambitious production. This grassroots approach helped build a community around the film, fueling its growth from a concept into a fully realized feature.[4]

Production

edit

Bestiary is the first feature-length film produced by Parcstar Assembly Inc., a dual-entity company with operations in both Delaware, and Jakarta, Indonesia.[5] Directed by Julio Rionaldo, the film was shot in 2022 with a minimal budget, featuring a cast of emerging actors.[6] Despite its limited resources, Bestiary marks the feature directorial debut of Julio Rionaldo, showcasing his distinct visual style that blends metafictional narratives, long takes, breathtaking mise-en-scenes, and cathartic personal dramas.[7][8]

Release

edit

Bestiary is scheduled for release in 2024, with its world premiere set to take place in Japan. A separate 15 minutes short film was released under the title of “King of Swords” on February 2024 at Kinosuite International in Jakarta, Indonesia.[9]
