The Bernt Michael Holmboe Memorial Prize was established in 2005 as a memorial award named after the mathematician Bernt Michael Holmboe (1795–1850), by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, to promote high-quality mathematics education.[1]

The prize is awarded to one or more mathematics teachers or a mathematics community within Norwegian primary or secondary schools.

The prize was first distributed in 2005. The ceremony takes place at Oslo Cathedral School, where Holmboe was once a student and later a mathematics teacher. The Norwegian Mathematical Society is responsible for selecting the recipients. The prize sum of NOK 100,000 is provided under the Abel Prize and was previously funded by the Abel Fund.[2] A scholarly seminar, known as the Holmboe Symposium, is held in conjunction with the prize distribution.
