The Australian Attack is a chess opening that begins with the moves:
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.a3
The move 3.a3 can be seen as simply a loss of a tempo for White. However it can also be useful in quite a few situations. For instance the Australian Attack allows White to play Nc3 without the concern of going up against the Nimzo-Indian, this intern means that playing this opening lets White avoid a lot of theory while also remaining flexible.[1]
