Atavista is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Donald Glover, under his stage name Childish Gambino. It is a remastered, altered, and finished release of Glover's previous studio album 3.15.20. The album features the same guest appearances from Ariana Grande, Kadhja Bonet, 21 Savage and Ink as the previous release, while also including additional appearances from Young Nudy and Summer Walker. Glover produced the album with a range of collaborators including DJ Dahi, longtime producer Ludwig Göransson, Chukwudi Hodge, Kurtis McKenzie and James Francies, Jr.
Promotion and release edit
Glover's fourth studio album, 3.15.20, was originally streamed to the public on March 15, 2020 before releasing a week later on streaming services.[2][3] The album was released amid the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as following the death of Glover's father. It received critical acclaim from critics, but Glover reflected on its unfinished nature and how it had impacted its reception and legacy.[4]
On the four year anniversary of 3.15.20, Glover teased a new album called Atavista featuring a tracklist with similarities to the original album. The updated tracklist featured new songs previously performed by Glover on the This is America Tour that had been omitted from 3.15.20's tracklisting.[5] During several radio broadcasts by his production company GILGA, Glover confirmed that 3.15.20 was released to streaming services unpolished because of personal issues and the start of the pandemic, and that he planned to re-release the project as a "finished" album under the title Atavista.[6][7] Glover revealed that following Atavista, a tentpole film from GILGA titled Bando Stone in The New World would release with its soundtrack acting as the final album under the moniker for Childish Gambino.[8][9] On May 8, 3.15.20 was removed from select streaming services leading up to the release of Atavista.
