Ashish Singhal (born 12 February 1989) is an Indian entrepreneur.[1] He is best known as the co-founder of CoinSwitch and Lemonn. Singhal is also known as the group CEO of PeepalCo, the parent company of CoinSwitch.[2]
In 2017, Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni and Vimal Sagar Tiwari co-founded crypto trading platform CoinSwitch whose valuation in 2021 was $1.9 billion.[3] In 2023, Singhal unveiled the umbrella company PeepalCo to transition from a single-product company to a multi-product company. Brands under the PeepalCo umbrella are CoinSwitch and Lemonn. [4]
Early life
editSinghal was born in Meerut, India, on 12th February 1989. His father is a doctor and his mother, is a homemaker.
Singhal attended Netaji Subhas University of Technology and completed a degree in computer engineering in 2011.[5]His current co-founder, Govind was his fellow batchmate from NSUT. During his second year, he interned at Naukri.com and in his third year he worked at Microsoft. After graduation, Singhal worked at Amazon as a Software Developer.[6] In 2015, Singhal quit Amazon to start something on his own. [7]
Career
editAfter exiting (company)|Amazon in 2015, Singhal joined hands with Vasudevan Thrikkazhipuram and Lavanya Venkatraman in their startup Urban Tailor, an aggregator of tailors.[8] Despite multiple rounds of funding, the company called it quits because the business model wasn’t scalable.[9]
In 2016, Singhal moved to Livspace co-founded by Ramakant Sharma, [10] who also happens to be his mentor. While working at Livspace, he began exploring and studying the world of crypto. Singhal along with Govind and Vimal, created an app to help track their investments in crypto. In June 2017, he quit Livspace and co-founded CoinSwitch.
CoinSwitch
editCoinSwitch began in June 2017.[11] CoinSwitch began receiving investments from multiple angel investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital, Ribbit Capital, Paradigm, and Coinbase Ventures. During this time, Ashish, Govind and Vimal, won almost all hackathons in India, including the one organized by Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India & SEA) which is the largest in Asia.[12] In January 2018, Sequoia Capital India funded CoinSwitch and moved them to their incubation centre. [13][14]
Today, CoinSwitch has grown significantly, becoming the first crypto platform to cross 2 crore users and has received substantial investment, at a valuation of $1.9 billion.[15] Coinswitch Ventures is the venture arm of CoinSwitch that invests and incubates early-stage startups that are developing blockchain-based solutions. [16] It has a VC investor network of over 70 participants. [17] [18]
PeepalCo
editPeepalCo was established in 2023, an umbrella brand that will house all its brands as part of a larger brand restructuring.[19] While Singhal is the Group CEO, Vimal is the group COO and Govind is the group CTO.[20] Current brands under this parent company are CoinSwitch and Lemonn.[21]
