The women's duet event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, will take place at the Paris Aquatics Centre in 2024.[1] It will be the 10th time the women's duet event is held at the Olympic Games.

Competition Format edit

Only one round of competition is held. Each team will perform a technical routine and a free routine.[2] The scores from the two routines are added together to decide the overall winners. Both free and technical routines starting lists are decided according to the World Ranking. First the non-ranked duets will be randomly drawn into the starting list and then the ranked duets will follow, going from the lower ranked competitors to the highest ranked competitors.[3]

The technical routine must be completed in between 2 minutes 15 seconds and 2 minutes 25 seconds. There are 2 panels of 5 judges for each routine. In the technical routine, one panel each considers artistic impression and elements.[4] The artistic impression judges each give three scores: choreography and musicality, performance and transitions; while the elements judges give a score for each element. Scores are between 0 and 10, with 0.25 point increments. The highest and lowest score from each panel (including within each element, for the elements panel) are discarded. The remaining scores are added in each panel. Finally, both panels scores are added and any penalties are substraed for giving the final technical score. In addition to 2 hybrids and 1 pair acrobatics (which can be placed anywhere in the routine), there are 5 required elements, which can be done in any order:[3][5]

  1. Difficulty 3.0: Starting in Back Layout position assume Arch position. 180º arc transition to Split position. A 360º rotation as legs close to Vertical position. Finally, a 1080º continuous spin.[A]
  2. Difficulty 2.8: Starting in Submerged Back Pike position. Thrust to Vertical position; maintaining height, legs are split to assume two alternating Airborne Split positions. Legs return to Vertical position. Ending with a rapid 180º spin.[B]
  3. Difficulty 2.9: Starting in Surface Ballet Leg Double position. Transitions to Vertical Position. Full twist. 180º rotation while the legs open to assume a Split position. Ending with a Walkout Front.[C]
  4. Difficulty 3.2: Starting in Front Pike Position. One leg is lifted to Fishtail position. Transitions through a 180º arc to Knight position. Full twist as the leg is lifted to Vertical position. Lastly, a 1080º continuous spin.[D]
  5. Difficulty 2.3: Starting in Submerged Back Pike position. Thrust to Vertical position. One leg is lowered to Bent Knee Vertical position while a twirl is done. Rapid 360º spin as leg extends to transition to Vertical position again. Ends with a Vertical descent.[E]

The free routine time limits are 2 minutes 40 seconds to 2 minutes 50 seconds. There is no restriction on the routine. The 2 panels for the free routine are the same as the technical ones. Likewise judges qualify in the same way. Therefore, the highest and lowest score from each panel are discarded, with the remaining scores being added. Finally, both panels scores are added and any penalties are substraed for giving the final free routine score.[3]

Technical Routine Variations edit

  1. ^ A 2.5 difficulty variation may be executed by doing a 180º rotation instead of a 360º and a 720º continuous spin instead of a 1080º.
  2. ^ A 2.4 difficulty variation may be executed by doing a single Airborne Split instead of two.
  3. ^ A 2.6 difficulty variation may be executed by doing a half twist instead of a full twist and without a 180º rotation.
  4. ^ A 2.7 difficulty variation may be executed by doing a half twist and a 720º continuous spin instead of a full twist and a 1080º continuous spin.
  5. ^ A 2.1 difficulty variation may be executed without the 360º spin and the leg extension being done while doing the vertical descent.

Qualification edit

A total of 18 duets qualify for the event. The 10 National Olympic Committees (NOC) that qualify for the team competition will be automatically awarded a place for duets. Each continent also receive one dedicated duet place given to the highest-ranked NOC from each of the five continental meets that do not have a qualified team. Africa and Oceania internally determined their selections while the 2022 Asian Games, 2023 Pan American Games and the 2023 European Games served as qualifiers for Asia, Europe and the Americas. The final 3 places will be given to the 3 highest ranked not yet qualified duets at the 2024 World Aquatic Championships.[6][7]
