Antonio Pedone (born November 14, 1936, Squinzano, Italy) is an Italian economist, emeritus professor of Public Finance at the Faculty of Economics at the Sapienza University of Rome, and a dean of public finance economists.

He served as an economic advisor to Prime Minister Bettino Craxi[1] and to Treasury Minister Giuliano Amato.[2] He was among the authors of the "Tax Reform of 1971" (incorporated into Law No. 825 of October 9, 1971).[3]

Biography

From 1966 to 1970, he served as a consultant for the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, which was led first by Luigi Preti and then by Giuseppe Caron during that period. From 1970 to 1973, he was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Public Finance in Paris, France.[4]

From 1976 to 1986, he was an expert member, appointed by President Giovanni Leone, of the National Council for Economics and Labour, and from 1978 to 1984, he was a member of the Technical Committee for the implementation of tax reform.[5] From 1983 to 1988, he served as an economic advisor to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, particularly to Prime Minister Bettino Craxi.[6][7]

From 1986 to 1993, he was a member of the Technical Commission on Public Spending at the Ministry of the Treasury and an economic advisor to Giuliano Amato, who was the Treasury Minister at the time.[8] In 1994, he was called by Prime Minister Romano Prodi, upon the proposal of Treasury and Budget Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, to serve as a member of the Technical-Scientific Council for Economic Planning at the Ministry of Budget. He later became President, succeeding Mario Arcelli, and held the position until 1996.[8]

From 1974 to 1977, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Economic Society, serving as Vice President from 2000 to 2003. In 1992, he was appointed President of Crediop by Treasury Minister Guido Carli.[9][10]

From 1992 to 1995, he served as President of the Italian Society of Public Economics (SIEP). From 2002 to 2005, he was President of the IRI Foundation. Since 2008, he has been a Corresponding Member of the Accademia dei Lincei.[11] He has also contributed to newspapers such as "Corriere della Sera," "Il Messaggero," and "La Repubblica," and to periodicals such as "L'Espresso," "Il Mondo," and "Mondo Economico."[12]

Throughout his career, he has been appointed as a board member of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro,[13] the Istituto Mobiliare Italiano (IMI),[14] the San Paolo Banking Group of Turin, and the Banco Ambrosiano Veneto.

He is also a member of the Executive Council of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation and the Scientific Committee of CER - Centro Europa Ricerche.[15]
