editHis father, Sándor Pollák, worked as the town's chief physician to control the cholera epidemic of 1873, for which he was appointed county chief physician; he helped to found the Szentes Hospital. Antal Pollák began his studies in Szentes and continued at the Academy of Commerce and Industry in Graz. Afterwards he started to trade with grain. As a hobby, he regularly carried out experiments in optics, electrical engineering, chemistry, and made astronomical observations with his own telescope.
In 1895 he made his telescopic telegraph, called the teleautograph. By 1899, together with József Virág they had completed the rapid telegraph, capable of transmitting 70 000 words per hour with Morse code. By 1901, they had improved their invention, which could now transmit text in Latin characters. In 1903, after the death of József Virág, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences awarded the inventors the Wehrmann Prize.
The rapid telegraph was not introduced in Hungary and only promotional lectures were given abroad. The success of the company founded in 1906 with the purpose of the dissemination of the invention were halted and then finally thwarted by the outbreak of the First World War.
