Andreas Christos Fouras (born November 12, 1973) is an Australian entrepreneur, inventor, engineer, businessman and investor. He is the founder, managing director and chief executive officer of technology innovation company 4DMedical.[1], and is also the company’s chief technology officer[2]. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in the field of velocimetry, particularly as the inventor of four-dimensional medical imaging with application to pulmonology[3].

Early life and family edit

Fouras was born in Brisbane, Australia, to parents of Greek heritage, with his father Jim Fouras being a prominent politician and member of the Australian Labor Party who rose to the position of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland.

Career edit

An engineering undergraduate of the University of Queensland, Fouras started his career in academic research studying experimental fluid dynamics in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne. His early research in wind tunnel quantification saw him gain recognition as a young leader in the area of fluid dynamics, developing a number of new approaches to the imaging of gas and liquid flow.[4]

Following completion of a master's degree in aeronautical engineering and a doctorate, Fouras was appointed as Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of Monash University’s Laboratory for Dynamic Imaging. His research was enabled by prestigious grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)[5] and the American Asthma Foundation. Fouras applied a novel concept in fluid dynamics in a physiological application through the development of XV Technology[6], capable of uniquely measuring airflow within the breathing lungs at every stage of the breath, with both high spatial and temporal resolution at low radiation dose. This research is documented in over 100 peer reviewed publications[7], and generated over 40 patents and patent applications.

In December 2012, Fouras founded 4DMedical Limited (originally known as 4Dx, which remains the company's ASX ticker code) as a vehicle for commercialising XV Technology[4]. A number of his former research laboratory team members joined the fledgling company at that time, with several technical staff still working at 4DMedical today in senior roles. 4DMedical was floated on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in August 2020 [8].

Following award of $A28.9 million[9] from the Medical Research Future Fund[10] [11] (MRFF), the world's first dedicated lung scanner was unveiled by Fouras and Australia's Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt MP[12], on March 17, 2022 at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney[13] [14]

During the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the University of Melbourne in February 2022, Dr Fouras conducted a 1:1 presentation to the Secretary on the capabilities of XV Technology with particular application to American veterans exposed to burn pits during overseas deployments.[15]

Dr Fouras has also briefed Congressional veterans advocate Representative Mikie Sherrill on the capability of XV Technology to support implementation of the PACT Act.[16] In January 2024, Dr Fouras hosted former U.S. Secretary for Veterans Affairs, Dr David Shulkin at 4DMedical's global headquarters in Melbourne.

In May 2023 Dr Fouras received an Honorary Professorial Fellowship within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Melbourne.

Military service edit

As an officer (general reserve) in the Australian Army and graduate of the Royal Military College of Australia, Fouras served in the Infantry performing command and instructional roles centred upon dismounted combat capability. He considers his military service to be a significant influence upon his character and personal philosophy.
