Manoel da Cruz Nogueira, O.Cist - Was bishop of Mariana, born in Portugal in 1690, ordained deacon and priest in 1712, as a member of the Cistercian Order. In the year 1738 was selected and confirmed as sixth bishop of the Diocese of Sao Luiz do Maranhão, and in the year 1745 was appointed as the first bishop of Mariana, Bishop Manoel da Cruz Nogueira took possession of the diocese Mariana only in the year 1748 , after undertaking a long journey from São Luiz do Maranhão to his new diocese of Mariana. Bishop Manoel da Cruz Nogueira, died in 1764 at the age of 73.
