Draft:AmpleHarvest.org

AmpleHarvest.org is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce hunger by stopping the waste of garden food. The organization encourages American backyard gardeners to donate their surplus garden produce to local food pantries.

History and timeline edit

AmpleHarvest.org was founded in 2009 by Gary Oppenheimer. As the director of the West Milford Community Garden, Oppenheimer created a committee to gather extra food harvested in the community garden and deliver it to local food pantries. The local program was named Ample Harvest West Milford. Oppenheimer then created AmpleHarvest.org, a comprehensive supply-side database in the national food network to educate, encourage, and enable gardeners to donate produce their nearest food pantry regardless of where they live in the United States. Today, AmpleHarvest.org works with America’s 62 million backyard gardeners to serve roughly 32,500 neighborhood food pantries. Produce donations have increased from 8.6% to 23.1% since AmpleHarvest.org was founded in 2009.

Awards and Recognition edit

In May 2010, AmpleHarvest.org founder Oppenheimer was named CNN Hero on the Larry King Live show [1] for his anti-hunger work in creating and promoting AmpleHarvest.org to food pantries and gardeners nationwide. In September of 2016 AmpleHarvest.org launched Food Waste Weekend, a yearly recurring virtual event for faith communities to learn more about food waste.
