Draft:Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture


The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) (shortened as Alliance Bioversity & CIAT) is a research for development agricultural organization based in Rome, Italy[1] with offices in 31 countries along four continents. It was established in 2019 with the merger of Bioversity International (established in 1974 in Rome, Italy) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (established in 1967 in Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Colombia), where is located the Genebank "Future Seeds", a global innovation center for the preservation of crop biodiversity[2][3].

Despite both centers being kept as separate legal entities, from 2020 work as a unified research system. The Alliance Bioversity & CIAT is also a CGIAR center, a network of 14 international non-profit organizations conducting agricultural research[4].

Its main focus of work is around food systems, climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and nutrition[5]. They work with local, national and regional partners in the global south, to generate innovations in agricultural landscapes[6].
