Albert Street Methodist Church is a church at Albert and Kruis Streets in Johannesburg, South Africa. The church is part of the Central Methodist Mission Circuit 0901 in Central District.
History
editOriginally known as The Wesleyan Native Mission, the Albert Street church has a tin iron-clad structure, original wooden floor, high rise elevated pulpit dating back to the early 1900s. The original foundation stone of this church was laid on the 𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟏𝟖𝟗𝟑.
The current building was built in 1915 with the foundation stone re-laid on 31 October 1915 by Prime Minister Louis Botha and Rev. G. Weavend. The apartheid government issued an instruction for the church to be closed in 1958 for being a ‘black spot’, it was later re-opened and continues to welcome worshippers.
