Adam Hanka (born 1989) is a Czech mathematician and computer scientist. He is also the Chairman of Volt Czech Republic since its registration in 2022.
Career
editHanka was born in 1989. During his school years, he spent a year in Brandenburg at the age of 17.[1] From 2009 to 2013, he studied computer science and programming at the Charles University and from 2013 to 2015, he studied visual computing at Saarland University and graduated with a Master's degree.[2][3] After graduating, Hanka worked as a software developer and researcher in the fields of machine learning, artificial intelligence, visual computing and computer vision in a start-up and for Avast in Saarbrücken and Prague.[3] Today, he is head of the data and AI team at a venture builder.[3][4][5]
Political work
editIn March 2019, Hanka joined Volt Europa to do something about the increasing populism in European politics.[2] In the Czech Republic, he initially co-founded Volt as a registered association, which he co-chaired together with Karolina Machová to prepare the founding of the party, which he has chaired since Volt Czech Republic was founded in June 2022.[6][7][8] He stood as the lead candidate for Volt in the 2022 local elections in Prague, but was not elected.[9][3] In November 2023, the party elected Hanka together with Barbora Hrubá as the party's lead candidate for the European elections.[10][11]
Political positions
editHanka believes in a strong civil society and is convinced that further European integration is necessary to solve cross-border problems and the challenges of the 21st century, such as climate protection, the digitalisation of public administration and the protection of human rights.[2][12]
Digital policy
editHanka sees the development of artificial intelligence and language models in Europe as a central building block for the sovereignty of European states and emphasises the importance of ensuring that such models are subject to European values. To ensure that AIs and language models build on European values and morals, it must be ensured that they are based on appropriate training data.[13][14] He emphasised that the ethical aspects of developing this technology must be given sufficient consideration.[15] Hanka criticises the fact that the European Union has so far invested too little in this area and suggests European cooperation along the lines of CERN or the European Space Agency.[13][14]
Social policy
editHanka supports Same-sex marriage and the introduction of a third gender.[2][16] Children should receive targeted support from primary school and pre-school age in order to prevent discrimination in the school system due to their origin. He is also in favour of increased investment in inclusion, social psychologists, school assistants and breakfast options in schools in order to reach the full potential of pupils.[17][16]
European policy
editTo prevent the European Union from being blackmailed by individual member states, Hanka is in favour of abolishing the right of veto in the European Council.[18][2] He also wants to develop the EU into a federal democracy and supports a common European defence policy and the creation of a European army.[16] He would like to see the Czech Republic join the eurozone as quickly as possible.[2][19]
Private life
editFrom 2007 to 2020, Hanka volunteered at AFS Intercultural Programs in the field of education and community building and was a member of the national board in the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2019.[20][21][3]
