Acuario Mazatlán was a public aquarium in Mazatlán, Mexico. It was inaugurated on September 13, 1980 and covered an approximate area of 1.0 ha (2.5 acres).[1] It was the largest aquarium in the region and had a large variety of marine and terrestrial animal species. After almost 43 years of service, on May 1, 2023 it closed its doors.[2]
History
editAcuario Mazatlán was inaugurated in 1980 at the initiative of the state government of Sinaloa, which was then presided over by Alfonso Calderón, with the aim of providing the population with a recreational place in the environment. Since 1991, a bird theater has been offered and a year the aviary opened.[3]
On February 1, 2017, the acrylic panel of the shark tank broke, causing a flood and the closure of the attraction; there were no deaths.[4]
Facilities
editThe aquarium had a main building in which most aquatic animals were exhibited and outside the enclosure a garden where birds, reptiles and mammals could be seen.
