The 2023 Northern Peninsular Malaysia Floods (Banjir Malaysia Semenanjung Utara 2023)[1][2][3] is a current natural disaster that began on September 28, 2023, and is ongoing. This event is characterized by widespread flooding across the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, primarily affecting the states of Kedah and Perlis. The main cause of these devastating floods has been attributed to heavy and persistent rainfall in the affected areas, leading to overflowing rivers and inundated low-lying areas. As a result of this catastrophe, a significant number of individuals have been displaced, with approximately 1,963 people forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in safer locations. Local authorities and relief agencies are actively engaged in providing assistance and relief efforts to those affected by the floods, while continuous monitoring of the situation is underway to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.

History edit

Four rivers in Kedah have exceeded dangerous water-level readings following several hours of heavy downpour.

The heavy downpours have already caused flash floods in Changlun, forcing 166 victims from 48 families to evacuate to temporary flood relief centres (PPS) at SMK Changlun and Dewan Kampung Tradisi.

Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) disaster management secretariat chief Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the agency was prepared to face any eventuality should the condition worsen.

Two rivers in Perlis have breached the danger and warning levels too following continuous heavy downpour

The Perlis National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) secretariat issued a warning that Sungai Jarum in Padang Besar and Sungai Arau in Arau have breached danger and warning levels respectively.

According to the update, Sungai Jarum's water level was at 34.31m, exceeding its danger level of 33.3m, while Sungai Arau's water level was at 6.85m, which is above its warning level of 6.5m.[4]

Despite the continuous rainfall which led to flash floods over the past 24 hours, residents living in risky areas in Arau are not planning to evacuate any time soon.

The number of flood evacuees in Kedah has risen from 701 to 1,220 .[5]

Four centres have been set up in Kubang Pasu – at SMK Changlun, Dewan Kampung Tradisi Lembah Keriang, SK Malau and Dewan PPK Lubuk Batu – and two in Kota Setar (SK Taman Aman and SMK Kepala Batas).

The remaining five are at SK Bukit Hijau, Maahad Tarbiyah Derang and Surau Permatang Limau in Pokok Sena, as well as SK Iboi and SMK Jerai in Baling, Bernama reported.

In Perlis, flash floods hit Kampung Kubang Gajah following continuous rain since yesterday. One temporary relief centre was opened at SK Kubang Gajah in Arau last night to accommodate residents from low-lying areas.

The state’s civil defence force director, Izaimi Daud, said the centre was opened at 8pm to accommodate 42 victims from 16 families.
