Favourites for the 2004 race included Peter Reid, who returned as defending champion, and Chris McCormark, following a sub 8 hour performance in Roth. Normann Stadler out split his nearest rival by 10 minutes on the bike, and the majority of the men's field by 20 minutes or more, to have a large lead starting the marathon. Stadler ran a 2.57 marathon to claim a 10 minute victory over Peter Reid.
