On the afternoon of June 13, 1976, an extremely violent F5 tornado affected areas of central Iowa, including the city of Jordan. The tornado was paralleled by an intense F3 satellite tornado that exhibited anticyclonic rotation for 25 minutes.[1] The F5 damage this tornado produced was described by Fujita as the most intense he had surveyed up to that point.[2] The tornado occurred the same day as the destructive 1976 Lemont tornado, an F4 tornado that caused 2 fatalities and 23 injuries in the Chicago metropolitan area of Illinois.[3]
