Dholakia Foundation

The Dholakia Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Gujarat, India, dedicated to sustainable development and social welfare. It was founded by Savji Dholakia, chairman of Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd., a diamond manufacturing and exporting company.[1][2]

History

Originally established as Hari Krishna Charitable Trust in 1996, the organization was renamed to Dholakia Foundation to reflect its broadened focus on various developmental projects, including environmental conservation and community empowerment.[3][4]

Activities

The foundation's environmental initiatives include constructing over 150 lakes in Gujarat to improve water storage capacity and support agriculture in drought-prone areas. These projects have increased the water storage capacity by 550 crore litres across 20 villages and have converted 250 acres of land into functional water bodies.[5][2]

In its reforestation efforts under Mission 102030, the Dholakia Foundation has planted more than 3 million trees.[6] This initiative is part of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and is supported by 1t.org, emphasizing the foundation's commitment to global ecological restoration.[7][8]

Additionally, the foundation invests in renewable energy, generating 2.8 million units of electricity through solar installations. This not only supports the foundation's sustainability goals but also provides energy to local communities.[9]

Social Welfare Programs

The foundation organizes mass marriages and provides scholarships, healthcare, and support to underprivileged communities. These programs aim to improve the quality of life and ensure sustainable community development.[10][11]

Recognition

The foundation’s water conservation efforts were recognized at the 2023 U.N. Water Conference, where it received special accreditation.[12] For his contributions to society through environmental conservation and community welfare, Savji Dholakia was awarded the Padma Shri in 2022.[13]

Leadership

The foundation is led by CEO Keziah Gerosano, an expert in international climate policy and climate finance.[14] Under her leadership, the foundation continues to pursue its mission through impactful and sustainable initiatives.[7]
