Deborah Anne Gunn, professionally known as Debé Gunn, is an American songwriter, record producer, screenwriter, author, and musician.[1][2] She has contributed to various music genres, including pop, jazz, R&B, rock, country, and Latin.[3][4] Gunn is also a member of Who's Who.[5]

Early life and career

Gunn was born in Modesto, Ceres, California. She attended San Jose State University and Tecun Uman School.[6] Beginning her musical career in the mid-1980s, she toured as a saxophonist and keyboardist with pop, jazz, and country bands before transitioning to songwriting and production.[3][4]

Musical style and contributions

Gunn's musical style is characterized by versatility, incorporating elements from multiple genres. She has explored Mariachi music and Mexican Banda music, releasing albums such as "Mariachi Diamonds of Debé Gunn", "Mariachi Blessings of Debé Gunn" and "Banda Boom Boom".[7][4] Her album "Mariachi Diamantes de Debé Gunn" was submitted for the 60th Grammy Awards, alongside her contemporary instrumental album "Trumpet Teardrops of Debé Gunn".[8]

As a songwriter and producer, Gunn has worked on both English and Spanish recordings. She wrote the lyrics and music for the musical "Nightbloom" composed the Flamenco music, and wrote the Spanish and English lyrics for the musical “Preciosa”.[5][9] She released the Spanish albums "Diamantes Mariachi de Debé Gunn" in 2017, and "Bendiciones Mariachi de Debé Gunn" in 2019, along with "Banda Boom Boom" in 2022, where she handled writing, arrangement, and production.[3][4][5]

Gunn has released several albums, including "Jazzscapes" (2013) and "Trumpet Teardrops" (2017), which have earned her recognition for her composition skills.[10] Her album "Jazzscapes" received the LA Music Critics Award in Jazz upon its release. In "Trumpet Teardrops", Gunn collaborated with notable trumpeters from the Mariachi genre, earning her two Global Music Awards in Jazz.[10][3][5]

In 2023, Gunn collaborated with Charu Suri, co-writing "Jackson Square Waltz" a fusion of Indian ragas and New Orleans jazz.[11][12][13]

In 2024, Gunn collaborated with the South African vocal group Afrika Mamas on the song "Christmas All Around the World", winning the Silver Medal for Global Songwriter & Lyricist at the 2024 Global Music Awards.[14][15][16]

Gunn is a voting member of organizations including The Recording Academy (NARAS), The Latin Recording Academy (LARAS), the Songwriters & Composers Wing of the Grammys, and the Producers & Engineers Wing of the Grammys.[17][6]

Gunn is a published photographer and author. Her book "Beautiful Faces" (2016) explores life's beauty through photography and lyrical prose.[6]
