Meaning
editThe common belief is that the lyrics are about someone committing suicide, however the band has stated it is actually a stab at media outlets hating on what the band believed in at the time.[1] Marianne Eloise of Louder stated that the song's lyrics explain the fact that the "patient" is dying.[2][3]
Reception
editCassie Whitt of Loudwire ranked the song number thirteen in the band's discography, stating the song was "symbolic of both MCR’s scrappy punk upbringing and the theatrics that defined the era of their third album." while also giving a shout out to Ray Toro and Frank Iero.[4] Sam Law of Kerrang! ranked the song as the band's sixth best, stating that the music had a "proper first introduction to the blistering wit, OTT musicality, and daubed-on darkness"[5] The New York Times magazine stated that Dead! borrows it's "springing gait" from Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky".[6] While also stating that the clanging sounds were reminiscent of the Beatles song Maxwell's Silver Hammer.[6] Tom Shepherd of Kerrang ranked the song number four on his ranking of the album, stating that the song "perfectly snared the monstrously dark wit that lurks around every corner of The Patient’s story."[7] Cassie Whitt of Loudwire pointed out the guitar solo sounded like the laugh of Woody Woodpecker.[8] NME magazine stated that the song has a "crisp, vast, and fiercely melodic kind of stadium punk that is barely emo in the slightest."[9] Sam Carter of Architects revealed the song was his favorite song by My Chemical Romance.[10] Mackenzie Templeton of Alternative Press ranked the song number two on the album.[11] Ariana Bacle of Entertainment Weekly ranked "Dead!" at number three on the album, stating the song was "spectacularly fun."[12] Billboard ranked the song at number three on their list of the 15 Best My Chemical Romance songs.[13]
