Career

edit

Before getting into politics and journalism, Bowes worked as the owner of a gun shop and also of an outdoor gear shop,[3] as well as a health insurance middle manager.[4]

In April 2021, Chay Bowes created the Irish political news website The Ditch, alongside journalists Eoghan McNeill and Roman Shortall and his personal friend[5] and businessman Paddy Cosgrave.[6][7]

Bowes had previously been involved in supplying information about Leo Varadkar providing a copy of a confidential document on GP contracts to Maitiú Ó Tuathail, president of the National Association of General Practitioners, in a story which was broken by Village Magazine.[5] Bowes resigned his directorship at The Ditch in June 2022.[8]

Connections to Russia

edit

Bowes addressed the UN Security Council at Russia's invitation in 29 June 2023,[9] criticizing NATO's role in the Ukraine conflict.[2] He described the war as a NATO-driven proxy conflict, warning of unregulated arms flooding into Ukraine.[2] Russia defended Bowes, while Ukraine's ambassador dismissed him as a “Russian stooge”.[2] Bowes, is known for exposing political issues in Ireland. His UN appearance was part of Russia's effort to shift blame for the war onto the West.[2]

Chay Bowes, has worked for Russian state media RT. Bowes, who previously worked in non-media roles, portrays the West as the antagonist in Russia's war on Ukraine. His rhetoric, aligned with Kremlin viewpoints, positions him as a key figure in disseminating pro-Russian narratives.[1][unreliable source?]

Following the invasion of the Kursk Oblast by Ukrainian troops, Bowes described it as a “last desperate roll of the dice for Ukraine”. He also claimed that the invasion by the “corrupt Kiev elite” was ordered by “the masters in London and Washington”.[10]
