Charles Chanda (born 25 August 1965) is a Zambian politician and former Minister of Health.[1] He was awarded the Zambia Medical Association's "Doctor of the Year" award in 2012. He was also nominated for the African Minister of Health of the Year award in 2018. He has also worked as a medical doctor and a public health specialist.[2] He is the president of United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ).[3][4]

Background
editEarly life
editCharles Chanda was born on 25 August 1965, in Luanshya, Zambia. He grew up in a mining town and was raised by his parents, who were both teachers.
Education
editChanda attended primary school at Luanshya Primary School and secondary school at Luanshya Secondary School. He then went on to study at the University of Zambia, where he earned a bachelor's degree in medicine. He later earned a master's degree in public health from the University of London.[2]
Political career
editChanda began his political career in 2006, when he was elected as a counselor for the Luanshya Municipal Council. He later became the mayor of Luanshya and then a Member of Parliament for the Luanshya constituency. He served as the Minister of Health from 2015 to 2020.[2][5]
Personal life
editChanda is married and has three children. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Allegations
editChanda has faced allegations of corruption and mismanagement of the health sector, which he has denied.[6]
