Chambersburg Township was named for a family of first settlers.[3]

According to the census conducted in 2018, the township has a total area of 29.63 square miles (76.7 km2), of which 29.09 square miles (75.3 km2) (or 98.18%) is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 km2) (or 1.82%) is water.[2]
