Speedy deletion request edit

Kotniski, can you point to the WP policy or guideline that says villages cannot be categorised under non-metropolitan county/unitary authority? There are well-established categories like that, e.g. the neighbouring Category:Villages in South Gloucestershire. Rwendland (talk) 17:08, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm not saying they can't be; but they aren't in this case (this category had just one article in it). If someone wants to create and populate these subcategories, fine; but if no-one's doing that, we ought to delete the unused category.--Kotniski (talk) 18:01, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm very happy to populate this category properly, as long as that is not against some policy/guideline, as so will be undone. I'd welcome the views of others who read this. Can we wait a few days to see if others comment? Rwendland (talk) 19:53, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have been asked to comment on this deletion request. I note Combe Down was in the category until a few hours ago. There are at least 30 or 40 articles in Category:Villages in Somerset which could usefully be put into this category & it then made a sub cat of the wider country one. This seems to be an anomaly based on wikipedia using Ceremonial counties of England ie Somerset and local government being reorganised in 1996 to use Unitary authorities of England ie Bath and North East Somerset. I would advocate keeping the category & recategorising all the villages in BANES (I would suggest a similar action for Category:Villages in North Somerset).— Rod talk 21:14, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have declined the speedy deletion of this category, as there is clear disagreement about it. I suggest that this requires a broader discussion about categorisation of settlements in the UK, perhaps at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography or a subproject. If anyone still wants this category deleted in the meantime, then nominate it at WP:CFD. Thryduulf (talk) 16:47, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have added all (or most) the remaining villages into this subcategory. Jaguar (talk) 18:24, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, as long as the category is populated, I don't object to its existence. But as mentioned above, the same ought to be done for villages in North Somerset, this also being a unitary authority within the ceremonial county of Somerset, otherwise we have the anomaly of two districts being treated in two different ways for no reason. (Ideally we would adopt the same procedure for all unitary authorities all over England.) --Kotniski (talk) 08:55, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
