Accurate description

edit

The category page says: "A Protestant Nationalist is an Irish and/or Northern Irish Protestant who supports separating Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom and uniting it instead with the Republic of Ireland as a 32-county republic."

I'm not sure that's accurate. What about people like Robert Emmet who lived before the North was separated from the rest of Ireland? Anirishwoman (talk) 16:49, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Redefinition

edit

As reflected in the above comment, proposing a redefinition of this category to accommodate individuals like Robert Emmet and Charles Stewart Parnell who are featured therein but who were not from Northern Ireland or who had no particular statement on an united Ireland. Either a redefinition of the description or a change in the categories of which this is a subcategory would be advised - i.e. linking it to Category:Irish_Protestants as well as the existing link to Protestants from Northern Ireland. Definition

I note that it was raised several years ago that the text defining this category and the categories which it is in, are not reflective of all those included in it. For instance several 18th and 19th century figures are listed here who died long before the partition of Ireland (eg James Napper Tandy). Also despite being in Category:Protestants from Northern Ireland, many of those included in the category, were not born in what is now Northern Ireland, and in some cases have no association with that area. I would thus suggest

1) The definition text is changed to something like "A Protestant Nationalist is an Irish and/or Northern Irish Protestant who supported Irish independence from Great Britain or separating Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom and uniting it instead with the Republic of Ireland as a 32-county republic."

2) This category is removed from Category:Protestants from Northern Ireland.
