Cite the rule

edit

User:Gonnym Please cite the place where it says that Category:Marvel Cinematic Universe element redirects to lists can not be a parent category to Category:Marvel Cinematic Universe character redirects to lists. Because that certainly does not make any sense.★Trekker (talk) 20:08, 15 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't feel like I "set the rules for the discussion" I asked a question, I wanted an awnser thats not just "this is the way it is" which seems to be the main way people react when someone doesn't seem to understand something on this website. Scondly, clearly Wikipedia does have "rules", and it feels pretty strange to claim otherwise (we may call them "guidlines" but they're rules by any other name). But thank you for explaing that the simplest solution to this is simply to correct the wording of the category.★Trekker (talk) 20:31, 15 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry if I misunderstood your intent and over-reacted. I've had dealings with editors who when they ask for a "rule", literally ask for something that says the exact thing they want to hear. Glad that wasn't what you meant. Your change to MCU episodes redirect category is good. Thanks for the help with the cats. Gonnym (talk)
Thank you for your great work as well!★Trekker (talk) 20:39, 15 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Categorizing

edit

@Gonnym: I adjusted the template to avoid having this be categorized in both "Category:Marvel Cinematic Universe redirects to lists" and its parent cat "Category:Marvel Cinematic Universe redirects" as it was causing an overcategorization issue. As per Template:Fiction-based redirects to list entries category handler#Notes, "The content-type used will be taken from the category name and be one of either "character", "element" "episode", or "location". It is rather counterintuitive to manually sort this cat when the temp does it for us. Trailblazer101 (talk) 21:37, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Your change also removed it from Category:Marvel Cinematic Universe characters which I noticed as I was looking for it there. The issue isn't with the template but with the fact that we have two top categories that are really the same one and should be merged (CfD). Gonnym (talk) 21:38, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Then that should have been added manually rather than forcing an improper overcategorization, which I have now done. If you think these cats should be merged, take it to CfD (though the redirects-specific one is used to specifically manage these redirects only). Next time, please adequately explain your rationale rather than continually reverting a justified edit. Trailblazer101 (talk) 21:41, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wonder why you don't follow your own advice. On 18:28, 17 July 2024 you wrote in a edit comment WP:BRD, WP:STATUSQUO apply. Discuss first before reverting again, yet here you allow yourself to revert as many times you want. Your edit is still incorrect. You are the one that has an issue with the categories. Don't create work for me in CfD that I have no interest in doing. Gonnym (talk) 21:45, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not telling you to do anything you don't want to do. I am merely explaining that the MCU taskforce organizes these cats in a very specific way. If you disagree with that, then take that up with the rest of the taskforce than on this barely watched cat. We both have reverted endlessly, so neither is in the right completely. I have upholded the taskforce WP:STATUSQUO and prevented an overcategorization issue. The temp has multiple options, so one way is not more correct than another as long as the cats are used in the end. Trailblazer101 (talk) 21:48, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't need you to explain to me things you think are correct but are not. If you'll look at the history of this category and other related categories you'll see that I've not only created most, but am also usually the only editor in the edit history. So how did I fail to see what I apparently did in the past and now disagree with? Additionally, the issue of overcategorization is because another editor created two identical categories. Removing the category (as I did in my last edit), prevents overcategorization and keeps everything working as it should (and unlike how your initial edit broke things). @Trailblazer101 and Gonnym: I don't want to get in the middle of this, but you have each reverted a whopping 6–7 times within 24 hours. This is way past WP:3RR and you know it. Edit-warring is never permissible regardless of who is "right" or "wrong" (WP:STATUSQUO and WP:BRD are non-binding essays for recommended practices, not policy); the only exceptions are vandalism and copyright violations. I really don't want to report you guys, but this could seriously get you both blocked. InfiniteNexus (talk) 19:50, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I recognize the consequences and am choosing not to engage with this any further. No one was in the right here and I am willing to let it go regardless of my opinion. Should anything eventuate from this, I would gladly accept what is owed, though I see no point in continuing this matter on my end. I do believe this all could have been handled better on both ends.
