Category:Irish Nationalist Movement

There was never an Irish Nationalist Movement or Irish nationalist movement. Like the category Irish Nationalist Politicians, started by the same user who created this one, these categories are somewhat forced and simply replicate other categories. Nationalist means different things to different people and this category name gives no real indication on what this category is for.--Damac (talk) 21:08, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Damac, I see one point you make, however firstly as I once explained, the categ Irish Nationalist politicians categorizes "nationalist activists" during the half-century or more prior to 1918, and the need to distinguish them from mere MPs, either those of the IPP or of other splitter groups. It does not dulicate them. Some of these MPs were not Irish nationals quite a few not nationalist activists. Examples, Edmund Vesey Knox, Charles Ramsay Devlin, Arthur John Moore, Sir Walter Nugent, 4th Baronet, Alfred Webb, Patrick O'Hare, Kevin Izod O'Doherty, Michael Henry amongst others. Then there were as well other nationalist activists who were not MPs, such as Andrew Kettle or James Daly, who would otherwise lack a category. A compromise might be to move the categ to 'Irish Nationalist activists' if this is clearer ?
The categ "Irish National Movement" is clearly defined on its page, and had no ulterior motive other than to provide a needed parent category for the many active nationalist political groupings prior to 1918, and well as being a overview category for related pages. The period was in many ways a relevant nationalist period covering land agitation, land settlement, home rule movement, demise of constitutionalism, etc.. The category is needed, but could be moved to 'Irish Nationalist activism (1860-1918)' or 'Irish nationalism (1860-1918)' or another variation ? Osioni (talk) 13:56, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
