Category talk:Discontinued software

Name of this category

edit

This Category is named "old software" "Unmaintained software", there are other alternative names, and here is an explanation why I think this is probably the best one:

"Legacy Software" or "Legacy Code": According to the article on winkipedia about Legacy Software, it refers to old software still in use, and "Legacy Software" means different things to different people...

"Discontinued software": Some old software may not have been discontinued, as has been simply without an update for some time and a new version may came out some day (if so, it should be removed from this category), besides, the software may not have been discontinued and simply been replaced by a new version (example: version 3 replaced by version 4) again, "Unmaintained software" encompasses more software

"Obsolete Software": Some software may be Unmaintained, but not obsolete, again, "Unmaintained software" encompasses more software.

"Unsupported Software", sure, this category is about software that is unsupported, but there is also new software that may be unsupported, so this might be ambiguous...

"End-of-life software": Similar to Obsolete Software, "Unmaintained Software" still has a more broad definition

"Abandonware": Software may be old but not abandonware, just look the case of PartitionMagic, it is old, buggy, does not work on Vista, does not even work on XP if it detects Vista Partitions, and Symantec still sells it...

If you have any suggestions to improves this, feel free to voice them. SF007 (talk) 15:15, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Timeframe

edit

Ok, should we name this category as "old software", at least a timeframe should be defined. I'd say that software that is 8 years old or older should fall into this category. "Old software", by itself, with no specified time frame, is too broad. - XX55XX (talk) 21:05, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, I see no problem with that, I would just refraise your words a little: Software older than X years AND without any updates/patches... ;) SF007 (talk) 00:46, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Problem solved with the new category name: Unmaintained software

change of the name of the category

edit

I have changed the name of this category to "Unmaintained software ", I think it is a better name and most people will find it a good move... SF007 (talk) 01:54, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
