This category is for tunes—generally not songs with lyrics—that are traditional, as opposed to composed by contemporary composers. Old composed tunes, such as those by Scottish composers Niel Gow and Skinner are a special subclass of their own. Some fiddle tunes have had lyrics added, but originated as tunes and remain so for the purpose of this category. For instance, Robert Burns wrote lyrics to tunes such as Soldier's Joy (song); nevertheless, it is usually played without singing and it is a consummate example of a fiddle tune.
