USAF in
September 1947 when it was established by the National Security Act passed in July, e.g.,
Biggs Army Airfield became Biggs Air Force Base on 27 Sep 47. On 26 Sep "Army" had been dropped from the
4126th Army Air Force Base Unit's name at
San Bernardino Army Airfield ("Army" wasn't dropped from the installation name until 24 Dec: "San Bernardino Air Field".) Most of the Army Airfields became Air Force Bases after 1947, e.g., many on 13 Jan 48 such as

Mather Field,
Maxwell Field,
Patterson Field/"Air Force Technical Base" (former
Wright Field), &
Westover Field. Airfields closed during the Army-to-Air Force transition planning that performed AAF personnel cuts included
Indian Springs Army Airfield (Jan 47),
Enid Field (31 Jan), and
Goodfellow Field (1 May).
