History

edit

After the Battle of Sagrajas in 1086, where the Almoravids defeated the Christian forces of Alfonso VI of Castile, the threat of Almoravid expansion into al-Andalus became more imminent. In response, al-Mu'tamid, the ruler of the Taifa of Seville, The Almoravids, having laid siege to Seville, increased the pressure on the Taifa of Seville. In response, al-Mu'tamid, the ruler of the Taifa of Seville, called for Alfonso VI's help to fight against the Almoravids[1]. As part of this alliance, Castile sent the commander Álvar Núñez to defend Seville against the advancing Almoravid forces.[2]

In 1091, the allied forces of Seville and Castile with Castile's commander Álvar Núñez sent to assist al-Mu'tamid confronted the Almoravid army near Almodóvar del Río. Despite their numerical strength and the advantage of the alliance, the Seville-Castilian coalition was decisively defeated by the Almoravids under the command of Yusuf Ibn Tashfin and Syr ibn Abi Bakr.[3][4]

The defeat at Almodóvar del Río had profound consequences for the Taifa of Seville and the broader region. Following the battle, the Almoravids rapidly consolidated their control over southern al-Andalus. The defeat marked the end of the Abbadid dynasty, which had ruled Seville, as the Almoravids took over the city and much of the surrounding territory.Al-Mu'tamid was deposed and exiled to North Africa.[1][5]
