History
editDue to the fact that the first competition for aircraft design in 1924 did not result in a result in the category of training machines, in order to meet the needs of the ITBL, in June 1926 it announced a second competition solely for a training aircraft capable of performing full aerobatics. Two engines were to be used to power the plane: Austro-Daimler 200 HP and SPA-6a 200 HP (used, among others, in Ansaldo A.1 Balilla and Oeffag D.III).[2][3]
The results of the competition were announced in December of the same year. Ryszard Bartel's design, BM-3, took first place, beating ST-4 and PWS-2. The design involved extensive standardization of parts: the lower and upper wings, ailerons, and horizontal tail halves were interchangeable, and the spars and fittings were identical.[4][5]
Two prototypes were ordered in September 1927, with delivery scheduled for February 1928. However, the financial crisis of the "Samolot" studio and Bartel's design work on a new plane, the BM-4, delayed the execution of this order. However, the designer, using the experience in building the Bartel BM-2 and Bartel BM-4 aircraft, proposed a new, improved type of Bartel BM-5 instead of the BM-3. The proposal was accepted and instead of the BM-3, BM-5 prototypes were made.[6]
