Etymology

edit

Its etymology is uncertain, with Charnock [d] favoring a derivation from a diminutive of Germanic bach ("little stream, creek")[1][2] and others from an eponymous seigniory in Normandy or from a corruption of Beacon.[1] It is sometimes folk etymologized from bacon.[3]
