Overview

edit

Founded in 1983, Arctic Adventures originated from the river rafting company Bátafólkið (The Boat People). In 2005, Bátafólkið merged with Arctic Rafting to form Arctic Adventures and the company expanded its offerings to include activities such as snorkeling and glacier hiking.[2][3][4] Arctic Adventures is headquartered in Reykjavík.[5][6]

In 2017, Arctic Adventures merged with Extreme Iceland, becoming the largest adventure tour operator in Iceland.[7][8][9][10] The company also opened an office in Vilnius in 2018.[11][12][13]

The company offers services including accommodation and excursions such as guided hiking tours, snowmobile tours, and glacier tours.[14][15][16] Arctic Adventures manages multiple hotels across Iceland, including Adventure Hotel Geirland in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Adventure Hotel Hof in Öræfi, Hotel Hellissandur, and The Wilderness Center (Óbyggðasetrið) in Fljótsdalur.[17]

Acquisitions

edit

In 2019, the company acquired Into the Glacier, the world’s largest man-made ice cave, known as the Langjökull Ice Tunnel.[18][19]

In 2023, Arctic Adventures further expanded its portfolio by acquiring Kerið crater in Grímsnes. This acquisition included plans to develop facilities around the crater while maintaining access to its natural surroundings. Kerið is located on the Golden Circle route, a popular area for tourists in Iceland.[20][21]
