Antônio Rodrigues de Alvarenga

Antônio Rodrigues de Alvarenga was a nobleman of the illustrious House of Alvarenga, born in Lamego, District of Viseu, Portugal. Son of Baltazar de Alvarenga and Messia Monteiro, Antônio came to Brazil in the service of the king, being one of the first settlers of Vila de São Vicente, founded in 1531 by the grantee Martim Afonso de Sousa, by concession from King John III of Portugal.[1]

Later, Antônio moved to São Paulo, where he gained respect and admiration for his distinction. Through the grace of the grantee of the Captaincy, he became the owner of the office of Notary of the Judiciary and Notas of São Paulo. Antônio married Ana Ribeiro, daughter of Estevão Ribeiro Bayão Parente and Magdalena Fernandes Feijó de Madureira. He died in São Paulo on September 14, 1614, leaving a will in São Vicente.[2][3][4]

  • Married to Merencia Vaz, born in the Captaincy of Espírito Santo, daughter of Antonio Vaz Guedes and Margarida Correa. Luís died in 1609, in São Paulo, SP, and Merencia died in 1666, in the village of Santos, SP.

5. Estevão Ribeiro de Alvarenga

  • Married in 1615 to Maria Missel, daughter of the Spanish João Missel Gigante and the Brazilian Isabel Gonçalves (Gigante). Maria died on May 11, 1660, in São Paulo, SP.

  • Married to Domingos Rodrigues. After Domingos' death, Anna married for the second time with the Portuguese Pedro de Araújo, born in Refoios de Ponte de Lima. Pedro died in 1616, in the hinterland of Paraupava, and Anna married for the third time with Pedro da Silva, widower of Luzia Sardinha. Anna died in 1644.

Achievements

Antônio Rodrigues de Alvarenga was a noble citizen of São Paulo, respected and powerful, with great influence due to his conquests in the backlands in several entries. In 1611, Dom Luís de Sousa, governor and general administrator of the captaincies of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and São Paulo, encouraged the most powerful and experienced São Paulo residents to venture into discovering gold or silver mines. Antônio Pedroso de Alvarenga led this important mission, forming a large troop at his own expense and making an entry for more than three hundred leagues from São Paulo, to the hinterland of the great Paraupava river.[5]

Declarations in the Will

Antonio declared in his will that his mother, Anna Ribeira, was his legitimate heir and that, if she predeceased him, his wife Anna Correa would inherit all his assets. He also mentioned the creation of a boy called Alberto, whom he considered as a carnal son, wanting him to study and, if it was not possible, he would give him 40 $000 réis and 5 souls.

Antonio Rodrigues de Alvarenga left a legacy of respect and admiration, being one of the pioneers who helped shape the history and society of São Paulo.[6]
