Angelica Petry-May (17 September 1933 Reutlingen - 8 January 2018 ) was a German cellist and music teacher. She was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1985) and the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria (1994).
Life
editMay studied piano at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, from 1949 to 1953, and violin until 1951. She then switched to studying cello in Stuttgart, Trossingen and Munich and was a student of Pablo Casals from 1954.[1] After the Second World War, she gave concerts as a soloist, performed with chamber music ensembles and was a member of the Odeon Trio, with violinist Kurt Guntner and pianist Leonard Hokanson .[2]
May's recordings include a recording of the cello concertos by Antonín Dvořák and Bohuslav Martinů with the Czech Philharmonic under Václav Neumann . As a teacher, she gave master classes. From 1975, she worked as a university professor, as successor to Antonio Janigro at the Robert Schumann Academy, and from 1985 as successor to Senta Benesch at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .[3]
