Ane Crabtree is an American costume designer who has been nominated for three Emmy Awards[1] and for four Costume Designers Guild Awards for Pan Am (2012), Masters of Sex (2015), Westworld (2016), and won for The Handmaid's Tale (2018).[2]
Biography edit
Crabtree was born into a mixed race family in South Dakota and raised in Henderson, Kentucky.[3] Her mother Kimiko is of Okinawan heritage, and met Ane's father Charles while he was stationed in Okinawa.[4]
Ane graduated from Henderson County High School in 1982.[5] She studied art, art history, and Shakespeare at Harlaxton College University of Evansville and fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.[6] Ane began her career as a fashion stylist for New York runway shows and music videos, and also was an editor for Elle during the late 1980s.[7]

Crabtree first became interested in costume design after wanting more inspiration from the world of fashion. She was increasingly inspired by real people and street fashion in New York City, and so moved to the world of costume design in film and television in 1990.[8]
She moved to New York at the age of 21 in 1985.[9]
Crabtree's career kicked off with designing costumes for many actors in film and television, including Dustin Hoffman, Antonio Banderas, and Sarah Jessica Parker.[10]
She designed the look for the original pilot of many television series, such as The Sopranos, Justified, Rectify, and Outcast.[3]
From 2013-2015, she designed costumes for Masters of Sex, for which she received her first Emmy[11] and second Costume Designers Guild Awards nomination.[12]
She came to prominence for her work in Westworld and The Handmaid's Tale.[13] For Handmaid's Tale, Crabtree drew inspiration from everyday objects and nature for the moss-green uniform of housemaids and a pair of well-loved boots for the utilitarian footwear worn by the handmaids.[14] She won the Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Costume Design for a Contemporary Television Series.[15]
