Background
editMount Kanlaon is an active volcano in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, Philippines. It is the most active volcano in the Visayas archipelago, with 30 eruptions since 1819. [1]
Eruption
editOn June 3, 2024, specifically on 6:51 pm, the Kanlaon volcano erupted for 6 minutes, creating a plume which rose up to 5,000 metres (5.0 km).[2][3][4] The eruption created a 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) Permanent danger zone (PDZ), which contained partially the towns of La Castellana, Negros Occidental and Murcia, Negros Occidental, and the cities of La Carlota, Negros Occidental, San Carlos, Negros Occidental, and Canlaon, Negros Oriental.[2][5] There were two identified earthquakes caused by the eruption.[4]
Response
editMore than 60 flights were cancelled overnight, affecting 5,000 passengers. Local government officials evacuated all residents living within 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) of the volcano. [6] Jose Cardenas, the mayor of Canlaon City, stated that you should “Go down to your respective evacuation centers, be vigilant, and prepare important things such as water and food.”[6] The city of Canlaon City and the town of La Castellana declared a State of calamity following the eruption.[7] Rescuers evacuated 500 families from the volcano.[8]
Aftermath
editOn June 18, 2024, the town of La Castellana, Negros Occidental was given the green light for more than 400 evacuees to go back to their homes. Affected families were given food, hygiene kits, sleeping kits, kitchen kits, which was worth 26 million pesos, by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The city of Canlaon was given 2 million pesos in financial aid, and the town of La Castellana was given 1 million.[7] Less than the supposed 7 million.[9]
Impact
editThe town of La Castellana lost 11,331,206.35 pesos during the eruption, and the city of Canlaon lost 93,494,538.20 pesos.[7] The eruption impacted the inflation rate from 4.1 percent to 4.3 percent after the eruption.[10] 29 flights were cancelled during the eruption.[11]
