2024 Delta Air Lines tire explosion

On August 27, 2024, two people were killed and one other was seriously injured when a tire on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-232 exploded when they were changing it.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 757-232 registered N683DA with serial number 27103. It was powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW2037 engines and the airframe was manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in 1993.[1][2]

Explosion

In the early morning of August 27, 2024, the tires on the aircraft were being changed when a tire exploded, killing two people and seriously injuring one other.

The victims were identified by the Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office as Delta TechOps workers 58-year-old Mirko Marweg and 37-year-old Luis Aldarondo. The injured person was not identified.[3]

Delta expressed their condolences to the victims in a statement stating “Tragically, two of our team members involved passed away and one other team member was seriously injured,” and “The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning. We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,”.[4]

John Laughter, the President and Chief of Operations of Delta TechOps, issued a note to staff on Tuesday morning acknowledging the tragedy is 'heartbreaking for us all.'

He stated: 'I’m deeply saddened to share that three TechOps team members were involved in an accident that took place early this morning in Atlanta... Wheel & Brake Shop.

'Please know your safety and wellbeing comes first – always, and that your leaders are here for you. Please continue to take good care of yourself and one another.

'We’re all in this together, and we’ll get through this by supporting each other.'[5]

Atlanta's mayor Andre Dickens tweeted his sympathy and offered his condolences to the family if the victims stating “I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees, My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their swift and full recovery.”
