Notes edit

  1. ^ Only 31 of the entered teams actually competed in the qualification tournament: West Germany qualified for the World Cup automatically as defending champions.
  2. ^ The Football Association of Wales decided to play this match on neutral ground due to capacity limits at Cardiff's Ninian Park and Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
