Category:Birds of (African countries)
editIsee back in 2016 someone deleted Categories: Birds of...(African countries)but just for the African countries, nowhere else. Long term project is to try to restore them in some fashion....Pvmoutside (talk) 11:06, 17 July 2023
Taxobar question
editWhen I move a bird species from one genus to another, how do I handle the Taxobar in the species article? Should I just delete the Taxobar? How do I created a new one?
A related question, how should I handle the Commons category page?
Thanks, Aa77zz (talk) 11:13, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
- I assume you mean {{taxonbar}}. After the move the taxonbar should have the Wikidata IDs for the new combination (in
|from1=
) and the old combination, and possibly some others. The taxonbar does pick up some names (basionyms) but its best practice to list them explicitly. An example may help make it clearer. — Jts1882 | talk 13:30, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Jts1882 for your reply. The genus Accipiter in IOC 14.1 contained 50 species. A large genetic study of the Accipitridae by Catanach et al 2024 confirmed that Accipiter was polyphyletic. In IOC 14.2 (and presumably eventually in other lists - I believe all changes are part of the WGAC initiative to harmonise the lists) Accipiter has been split into 5 genera: 4 genera have been resurrected: Lophospiza, Aerospiza, Tachyspiza and Astur. I'm sure, ornithologist will eventually describe some common morphological features of birds in the resurrected genera but frustratingly Catanach et al only discuss the genetics. Only 9 species remain in Accipiter - ie 41 species have changed genera. These include many well known species - some of the articles are large (actually too large). I've created short articles for the new genera and I'm in the process of editing the species articles to reflect the change of genus (I'm not "moving" articles in the wiki sense.). As an example - how do I change the {{taxonbar}} in Chinese sparrowhawk. - Aa77zz (talk) 16:47, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Creating distribution maps from IUCN Red List data
editHello, I have just recently joined this WikiProject as I am working on updating and improving various bird articles, especially of Australian broad-tailed parrots and their close relatives.
I've noticed quite a few species don't have distribution maps. I have found a reliable source (The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) and have downloaded the Range Data - Polygons (SHP) file from the first species I would like to create a map for.
Would anyone be able to show me how to convert this file into a distribution map that fits Wikipedia's standards of copyright-free and uniform content?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guatemalan flicker and northern plain xenops
editThis summer IOC split the Guatemalan flicker from northern flicker. Currently Guatemalan flicker is a redirect to the northern flicker article. Does the entire contents of northern flicker including talk and history need to be copied into Guatemalan to replace the redirect template, and then pruned to describe the new species? If so, how?(Of course northern needs some editing as well.) Or can I just write a new article to replace the template? A similar issue arises with northern plain xenops, split from what is now Amazonian plain xenops, except that there is no page for the northern. Craigthebirder (talk) 13:42, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- No, you can just start an article from scratch at Guatemalan flicker. FunkMonk (talk) 13:49, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Will do for both new species. Craigthebirder (talk) 15:09, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- But probably not until after this fall/winter Clements and BLI/HBW updates. So if anyone else wants to go first, have at it. Craigthebirder (talk) 16:23, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- It may be useful that Birds of the World currently has the Northern Flicker on free preview and has an extensive systematics section. — Jts1882 | talk 06:58, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Will do for both new species. Craigthebirder (talk) 15:09, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
New genera per IOC
editIn August the IOC created (or restored) two genera within the tyrant flycatchers, family Tyrannidae: Acrochordupus and Tyranniscus. I'm in the process of expanding the articles for the five affected species. Can someone make templates and whatever else is needed so their taxoboxes recognize the new genera? I looked at the directions for making the genus template but am not comfortable trying to make them. Thank you. Craigthebirder (talk) 22:22, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Templates {{Taxonomy/Acrochordopus}} [editid (see below)] and {{Taxonomy/Tyranniscus}} created. — Jts1882 | talk 09:11, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you again. I should be able to do some more of them myself. Craigthebirder (talk) 10:16, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- It is fairly straight forward once you've done a few. If you add a taxon which doesn't have a taxonomy template, the edit preview of the taxobox has a "fix" link which takes you to a page with the template partially filled in. You only need to add the rank, parent and a reference. But if you are more comfortable getting someone else to create it, you can continue to ask here and should usually get a prompt response. — Jts1882 | talk 16:48, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- That should be Acrochordopus (IOC 14.2). Kweetal nl (talk) 09:09, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- Moved to {{Taxonomy/Acrochordopus}}. — Jts1882 | talk 17:08, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
