Misgendering of PBA athletes

edit

Fiddling with athletes these days when I noticed that several players have been misgendered as male in talk pages and included in WikiProject Women's Sport (ex. Eddie Laure, Robert Bolick, Fritz Gaston and Carlo Sharma). Is this the work of an overlooked vandal or a bug? Borgenland (talk) 17:05, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

It was by KiranBOT, a bot, so a bug.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 01:10, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Hariboneagle927 and Borgenland: thank you for pointing out the mistakes. I was provided a list of around 4000 categories. These categories were supposed to contain articles about only women. There might have been an oversight while creating the list itself, or some men's articles might have been added to the incorrect categories. Regarding Carlo Sharmam, and Robert Bolick which are from Category:De La Salle Green Archers basketball players is for men's players, which seems to have been in the list. While Eddie Laure was assistant coach of the UST Golden Tigresses women's varsity basketball team, maybe thats why he is of interest for the women's wikiproject? Fritz Gaston is in the Category:Philippines women's national basketball team coaches. I am willing to rectify/make changes based on suggestions, but I think first we should look for the reason which caused these edits. Maybe @Hmlarson: can help. —usernamekiran (talk) 11:31, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
There had been men who had coached women's sports teams in the Philippines (and probably elsewhere).
Tip for categorization for college sports teams: In the USA, the women's teams almost always have the same team nicknames as the men's teams. For example, the women's basketball team of the University of North Carolina are also the "Tar Heels", just like the men (not "Lady Tar Heels"). There are a very few exceptions. In categorization, the way to distinguish is the word "men's or "women's" in the titles.
In the Philippines, the women's teams are named after the women's counterpart of the male nickname, which is always (no exception) the primary nickname. For example, the men's basketball team of the Far Eastern University are the "Tamaraws", while the women's team are the "Lady Tamaraws". It can be creative, like "Growling Tigers/Tigresses", but mostly the word "Lady" is added, like "Knights/Lady Knights". The 2 exceptions are Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines Diliman, which are like the US teams having the same nickname regardless of sex, so it's always "Blue Eagles" and "Fighting Maroons", respectively. For categorization, the women's teams usually have the word "Lady", while the men's teams do not.
There were a series of WP:RMs about this, and the latest just ended a few days ago. See Talk:University Athletic Association of the Philippines#College sports articles naming; there had been categories that had been renamed as a result.
While men can coach women, men can't play with women (not yet), and women don't play with men (no women are good as men yet to make a team), so the player categories can be straightforward for now. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:39, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I can reverse the changes to the articles from that list. I already have the program ready. —usernamekiran (talk) 12:38, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I can only speak for projects involving the Philippines. For now there is certainly that Ateneo men’s, UP men’s and the 2 UAAP men’s are wrongly categorized. Will check the others later. Borgenland (talk) 12:41, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Jeez Category talk:UAAP men's basketball tournaments was tagged as women's sport when the category title itself mentions men. All Adamson, Ateneo, La Salle, FEU, NU, UE and UST categories were also wrongly tagged.
Interestingly, the NCAA (Philippines) teams may not have been affected. I checked Category talk:Letran Knights basketball players and there were no women's sports project link.
Category:Kentucky State Thorobrettes basketball is a women's team; the men's team are the Category:Kentucky State Thorobreds basketball, an example of Philippine-style naming in the USA.
The other categories seem to be sports teams and competitions from other countries and someone else should make a judgment on those. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:47, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Second ladies and second gentleman

edit

Please check the Categories for deltion for Second ladies and gentlemen of the Philippines it has been an impasse and would probably benefit for or against deletion of said category.05:11, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

This is ridiculous, the discussion closed in a no consensus. Alas Wikipedia retains a hoax of a category.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 04:39, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Articles for optional LRT-1 station are created too soon?

edit

Seeking the advice of railfans here. I think these articles, Manuyo Uno station and Talaba station, violate WP:CRYSTAL and are basically cases of WP:TOOSOON. I've sort of followed the developments of the LRT-1 extension including the impending opening of the 1st phase up to Dr. Santos station but there has never been any serious mention of these proposed Manuyo Uno and Talaba stations. Personally, I think both stations are awkwardly placed. —seav (talk) 09:35, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Agree, proposed stations are usually not notable. A quick google search for similar cases turned up Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/George Street railway station which was a redirect. These could be draftified I suppose, although most of their text is general LRT information. CMD (talk) 11:57, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Manuyo Uno and Talaba were actually designed as part of the LRT-1 South Extension proposals of years past, but as far as I know have only recently been made "optional". If there is information that points to the notability of these stations, then I don't see why we should keep them, but if there isn't then it would be a better idea to draftify them so we have them for later when the stations actually get built out. --Sky Harbor (talk) 18:25, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Based on the comments above, I boldly moved both to the Draft space where they won't bother regular stations until they're needed. —seav (talk) 22:14, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apparently, you can't draftify articles that are older than 90 days per WP:DRAFTNO and this move has been reverted by CFA. Per WP:BRD, if nobody objects or suggests an alternative course of action by tomorrow, I will start an AfD for these two articles and we can then formally discuss their merits and notability and they could potentially be deleted or maybe properly (instead of boldly) draftified. —seav (talk) 00:15, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, everyone! Given that there are no objections or proposed alternative courses of action, I went ahead and nominated both these for AfD. —seav (talk) 21:05, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Divisions section in infoboxes of provincial articles

edit

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed (did a quick search of the archives) but I think listing all cities and municipalities under a Template:Collapsible list in the infobox is too much detail and is basically redundant with the corresponding section in the article body. See Pangasinan for an example. I think it's enough to state how many cities and municipalities a province has in the infobox but not to list all of them there. —seav (talk) 21:57, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

See also Metro Manila's infobox. I'd agree on this, like x municipalities, y component cities, also associated with z independent component/highly urbanized cities. Also, we'd also do not have to list every board member or councilor. Just the party standing like (PFP 5, Lakas 5, nonpartisan 2) should suffice.
Also, since we're into LGU articles, several articles all elected officials as "Members of the municipal council", e.g. La Trinidad, Benguet#Elected officials. Contrast that with Iba, Zambales#Government which does it right; only the councilors and the vice mayor are members of the Sangguniang Bayan, I'd even include the ABC, SK and IPMR (if any) as members. I'd rather do this after the election, and remove such captions, and just call it as "Elected officials". Howard the Duck (talk) 23:23, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
What's our course of action here, removed such collapsible lists in infoboxes? There are just 82 provinces, and is doable. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:30, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I !vote to delete the lists. Not sure if we should just indicate numbers, or add a link like with Guiuan (and other city/municipality articles), and/or add a footnote about ICCs and HUCs. —seav (talk) 01:04, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've checked California and Bali, first-level subdivisions, and they don't have something like this in the infobox. I've searched further, and we can emulate what Hauts-de-Seine does. I'd be wary on HUCs and ICCs; these should be clearly distinguished that those are not under provinces. Here in Wikipedia, I've seen "Naga is geographically in Camarines Sur"... which doesn't make sense as Camarines Sur is a province and a natural feature. Even if say, "Cebu City is geographically in Cebu", yes it is geographically in Cebu island, but Cebu provinces is a political unit. I'd not exclude these though, and just some add some note about this. Howard the Duck (talk) 01:22, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

MILF

edit

The article describes the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the past tense, but isn't the decommissioning still ongoing? And we still have several ridos involving the group. Borgenland (talk) 03:22, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the group is still extant. It was a secessionist group, but it still definitely exist as an organization. Hariboneagle927 (talk) 03:40, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
In that case I am updating the was in the first sentence. Borgenland (talk) 04:16, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

NIR template

edit

Created Template:User Negros today. I notice a lot of flags and template aren't made that concern the Philippines.

This user lives in the Negros Island Region (NIR) of the Philippines.

Dennis Brown - 12:39, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is this the only regional thing we have? I've been trying to find one up north. Borgenland (talk) 14:45, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just make it yourself, borrow the code, create. Or if you like, just ping me with what you want. They are pretty easy to make, but I will for you if you like. I'm going to move from Mindanao to DGT in January, so I made it myself. NIR is a new entity, I'm curious if that means I will have to drive from Dumaguete to Bacolod for some govt. services since they will be splitting govt functions between the two "former" province capitals. That is an unusual setup, and not exactly a short drive. Dennis Brown - 23:55, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

List of National Cultural Treasures in the Philippines

edit

I've been running the page through Earwig showing alarming copyvio from pertinent laws but am not sure if there are exemptions under public domain if it came from a private repository, not the OGRP. Borgenland (talk) 15:17, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Private repositories were not the original authors of the law so... Howard the Duck (talk) 16:29, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Exactly this. An exact copy of public domain content on a non-free website does not make it non-free. Chlod (say hi!) 16:34, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'd recommend replacing the link to the Official Gazette, Congress or Supreme Court (if available) though to avoid this. Howard the Duck (talk) 16:37, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I replaced the Lawphil reference to a Senate.gov link. --- 06:41, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Is there anyone from this WikiProject capable of accessing this article posted to Rapper.com. The article is given as the source for File:SM City Caloocan Interior.webp, but registration is required to see the full article. The few images that I can see aren't licensed the same way as the uploaded file, which makes me wonder whether license chosen by the uploader is correct. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Template:WikiProject Tambayan Philippines Edit request to accommodate Philippine music task force

edit

Hi there, I’d like to bring to your attention the WikiProject talk banner template. I'd like to add the Philippine music task force to sort those under the task force's scope. I’ve already made an edit request on the template’s talk page since it is template-protected. I’m hoping an admin or a template editor can make the necessary changes to accommodate the newly established Philippine music task force. Thanks in advance! – Relayed (t • c) 08:54, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done. See Template talk:WikiProject Tambayan Philippines#Edit request 9 November 2024 for further info. Thanks! :) Chlod (say hi!) 09:21, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
