A policy discussion was conducted here which concluded that status symbols in user cloaks was undesirable. See page history for details. - Fennec 02:21, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

How about Languages?

edit

What about languages? Should we have user.fr.wikipedia for a user on the French wikipedia? If so, should we let users list all their fun languages? user.fr.de.ia.simple.ee.es.wikipedia, if they really want it, letting them choose the order for all their languages? If we do this, should we force English users to have .en? - Fennec 14:24, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)

And if that's the case, what do we do for multiple usernames on multiple Wikipedias? O_o - Fennec 14:32, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I don't like this any more than I do the status things. Too messy. Dori | Talk 14:59, Apr 6, 2004 (UTC)
I don't think it's very practical. I'd edited 85 Wikipedias before I stopped counting. I don't want all those in my cloak and I don't want only en because 12% of my edits are not on en. Angela. 16:38, Apr 6, 2004 (UTC)
In that event- just speculating for the future- what do we do when we have two users with the same name on two different wikis? Unlikely, but possible. Also, what if we made the language codes purely optional at the discretion of the user? Would that be desirable? You could have foo.wikipedia or foo.de.wikipedia (or your choice of code) at will, and deal with the consequences yourself. - Fennec 16:50, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)
In that case they wouldn't be able to register the same username, so the cloak would just go with whatever name they choose, and it shouldn't be a problem. Dori | Talk 23:32, Apr 6, 2004 (UTC)

I read this quickly, and quickly I understood nothing :-) So, my question will be purely academic. In case you are changing something, will that change only for #wikipedia channel or all channels; If that changes for all channels, please discuss it on wikipedia-l and explain what you are willing to do; not only here. Thanks FirmLittleFluffyThing 04:17, 8 Apr 2004 (UTC)

It affects people, not channels, so if you have a cloak in #wikipedia, you will have that same one in any channel, even non-wikipedia ones. There's nothing to stop #fr.wikipedia setting up a different scheme and handing out different cloaks, but you couldn't have both under the same IRC username. Angela. 17:00, Apr 8, 2004 (UTC)
hum. Curious. Ok :-) FirmLittleFluffyThing

Status of Cloaks

edit

As it seems to be the general consensus that cloaks should follow a flat scheme, I have directed the Freenode staff to set all existing cloaks to just username.wikipedia. Fennec 02:13, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)
