Arizona Republic edit

I'm hoping someone with access to Highbeam or some other subscription news aggregator can help me improve Lion Guard by finding a specific source:

  • McDermott, J. "Trump’s Brownshirts? Militia vows to 'protect' Donald Trump", Arizona Republic, 13 June 2016

I'm at a loss. Not only can I not find the source, but I can't even find any evidence online that it ever existed. Can someone please find the source and confirm that it actually exists? Thanks in advance. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 04:29, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Dr. Fleischman, I have searched Newspapers.com archive for Arizona Republic. This is probably a made-up citation. Queries like Lion Trump, Trump Militia, McDermott Trump or Lion Guard yield no meaningful result for the whole of June 2016. Maybe the month is wrong. --Skr15081997 (talk) 05:17, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I was thinking. And I already looking in azcentral.newspapers.com. Are there other subscription services in which you can search for an article title across all publications and dates? That's why I was thinking of Highbeam. --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 05:31, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@DrFleischman: I checked Highbeam, nothing there either. I also checked newspapers.com as well but there is no article that mentions "trump" and "brownshirts" in the Arizona Republic, ever (only one opinion piece from Dec 2016 that has nothing to do with the article in question). Regards SoWhy 06:57, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have you asked User:OberRanks yet? It seems he's the one who added that reference in the article, and he's still on Wikipedia, so maybe he can help you. (Seems like a dubiously reliable user, with a 10000 edit count and a prominent 20000 edits badge on his user page.) – b_jonas 12:10, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't asked OberRanks about this particular source yet, though I was intending to if we couldn't find it here. OberRanks and I have had our share of friction over these very sorts of issues lately, and I didn't want to add fuel to the fire unnecessarily. Of course I'd be appreciative if they could substantiate the citation. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 15:59, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The page Talk:Lion Guard is a pretty good record of Fleischman's concerns for this article. The "friction" is pretty much one sided as I've answered every question given about the sources for this article and where they came from. I'm perfectly fine with removing dubious or unsourced material, but have left this article now as there is a strong indication of some conflict of interest issues developing. The best thing would be for other editors to start adding additional material. I've gone about as far as I can with the primary source material, most of which was given to me by another source (the Maryland Republican Party). I also removed the page from watchlist as its not worth the effort to defend every source listed. -O.R.Comms 16:52, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I checked Westlaw, which has the Arizona Republic in full text from this period, and there was nothing. There were a handful of articles covering the Lion Guard from other publications, but nothing with this title. It may be time to mark this request Resolved and move on. I see no reason to doubt OberRanks' probity, but I think O.R. may have been given a bad source. John M Baker (talk) 14:14, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@DrFleischman: I came to the conclusion that it's a bogus source after checking ProQuest (which claims to have the full text of the The Arizona Republic, plus its online edition, plus its blogs) and searching ProQuest, Factiva, Lexis/Nexis, and NewsBank for any combination of the above keywords in any publication on any date, without finding a good match. As OberRanks is not prepared to defend the source, I think it's safe to remove it and any content sourced to it. Is there anything else the Resource Exchange can do for you on this, or may this be marked {{resolved}}? --Worldbruce (talk) 15:44, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance verifying Financial Times reference edit

{{Resolved}}

Today's "Did you Know?" section on the front page states that "the Border Police of Georgia have continued to help enforce Georgian sovereignty over Abkhazia and South Ossetia since the end of the Russo-Georgian War".

This statement seems potentially contentious because Abkhazia and South Ossetia have claimed independence from Georgia and are recognized as independent states by a handful of other countries (most notably Russia). It is also unclear what exactly is meant by "help enforce Georgian sovereignty".

Looking at the linked article, Border Police of Georgia, it turned out that the part of claim pertaining to South Ossetia had a reference that did not support the claim so I removed it. (In fact the cited source was a news article about an incident where South Ossetians removed a Georgian flag from disputed territory claimed by South Ossetia, and did not mention the Georgian border police at all.)

The fact that the first reference was invalid calls into question the second reference in this sentence. However, the second reference is behind a paywall so I am not able to access it.

Can someone check whether the reference below supports the claim that "the Border Police of Georgia have continued to help enforce Georgian sovereignty over Abkhazia [...] since the end of the Russo-Georgian War"?

  • Gorst, Isabel (August 20, 2009). "Georgia threatens Abkhazia over sea-trade". Financial Times. Retrieved September 21, 2017.

It would also be helpful to make the claim more specific by describing what actions the border police have done in the Abkhazian area to enforce Georgian sovereignty claims.

Thanks! --2601:644:1:B7CB:44D2:D1A7:14DD:E76 (talk) 21:43, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article does support the assertion. Relevant passages: "Abkhazia, the breakaway region of Georgia, threatened to use force to protect its seaborne trade on Thursday after Georgian coastguards arrested a vessel bound for Sukhumi, Abkhazia’s seaside capital, in the second case of its kind this week. . . . Georgian coastguards arrested a ship carrying scrap metal from Abkhazia to Turkey on Thursday, the fourth such seizure this year. The vessel, operating under a Cambodian flag and manned by a Syrian crew, was bound for Turkey, the Georgian border police said. Earlier this week Georgian coastguards diverted a Turkish fuel tanker approaching Abkhazia to Georgia’s port of Poti and arrested the captain." Note that, according to our article, the border police includes the coast guard. John M Baker (talk) 23:20, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I updated the article; the sentence now reads: "Since the end of the war, the Coast Guard has continued to the enforce the Georgian sea blockade of Abkhazia, arresting several commercial vessels traveling to and from Abkhazia on the Black Sea." 2601:644:1:B7CB:44D2:D1A7:14DD:E76 (talk) 00:00, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Pbsouthwood: sent index. Ch 6 is 19 pages. I'm leery of copying that on top of the 15 pages of chapters 1 & 2 because the entire meat of the book is only 79 pages, the rest being taken up with various forwards, introductions, a glossary, reference materials, etc. Also the nature of the chapter puts it far from the ideal, scholarly, source. I feel a better source must exist, although I don't have one to suggest. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:34, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Worldbruce, Please don't go beyond your comfort zone. Maier is one of the more useful sources on the topic, as it is well known, and a landmark of sorts, you could say he opened the closet. Most of the people in the list you sent appear to be well known in recreational and scientific diving. I guess at least half would qualify for a Wikipedia article, but I can live without chapter 6, interesting as it may turn out to be. We can call this resolved with thanks. • Usernameunique, ha! Don't mean to brag, but I probably have the biggest Boniface-related archive in the world. It's my only vice. Anyway, I do have his dissertation; I was hoping for it to be published and more widely available, so it could have an effect. The article you sent me, and the few other things that he did academically (that I know of), are all related to that subject matter. He's not the only one for whom academia hasn't worked, for whatever reason: you seem to be better at searching than me, so maybe you can find out what happened to Janina Cünnen after her wonderful (but thoroughly German...) dissertation Fiktionale Nonnenwelten was published. There's a few more names that I can rattle off: it's a rough business, rougher than many may think. I will drop him a line though, if only to say hello. Thanks again! New York Times lookup edit

This article John Serry Sr. has a lot of off-line references to the New York Times. I am wondering if these are reviews or upcoming event listings. I would appreciate any help to link these online, or in finding out if they are advertisements or legitimate journalistic work. I don't have a subscription to use the search, or a title to use a Google search. --—Anne Delong (talk) 19:12, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Anne Delong: The two NYT citations from the 1930s are advertisements that identify an orchestra, leader, and venue, but don't mention Serry. Searching for "John Serry" returns only one NYT news story (as opposed to display ad) that is cited in the article: "Diseuse in Debut Here", 1 March 1942, p. 36. It makes a passing mention of Serry: "Assisted by Lou Cooper, pianist, and John Serry, accordionist, ..." Email me if you would like a copy. Let me know how far you would like to pursue citations to pages that don't mention Serry or advertisements that do mention him. --Worldbruce (talk) 20:05, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Worldbruce. I think that the ads should be removed, especially ones that don't mention the subject. I've put a note about that on the talk page and I'll wait a few days to see if anyone objects.—Anne Delong (talk) 21:05, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Ms. Delong - Thank you in advance for your thoughtful analysis. The references in question (i.e. to the New York Times) might actually serve a useful purpose for prospective researchers of the future. Consequently I would advise against removing these references without first considering the following analysis. While there can be no doubt that the presence of an "advertisement" does not unequivocally substantiate the occurrence of a historical event in the same manner that a reference from a newspaper article, it is equally clear that its presence in an authoritative source such as the The New York Times does serve to increase the probability of a correct citation for the subject matter described in the article. It would seem highly unlikely that noted professional musicians and the promoters at professional concert venues such as Radio City, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel or the Plaza Hotel in New York City would allocate substantial time and resources in order to advertise concert performances on specific dates and times in an authoritative source such as The New York Times in a fictitious manner, while actually scheduling another performance on exactly the same date and time at another concert venue, or perhaps even more improbably --failing to schedule a concert performance at all. In addition, the administrators of such noted professional schools of the era (such as the Biviano Accordion Center) could hardly be expected to advertise their course offerings and the noted musicians on their faculty for purely frivolous reasons. In addition, while these references may not actually cite the name of each of the artists performing within the orchestral ensembles cited in the article, they do serve to substantiate and document the existence of the musical ensembles in question during the time period referenced within the article. In addition, one could hardly expect an advertisement to provide a compete listing of the members of an entire orchestral ensemble during this period of time (1930's - 1940s) i.e. before the advent of the Web. In so far as these references serve to document and substantiate the existence of the orchestral ensembles cited within the article, they provide a useful function by providing credible documentation for the contextual framework of the article itself. In the "ideal world" such citations would provide the specific names of the artists and perhaps even a critical review of the performance itself. One should keep in mind, however, that during while World War II raged in the late 1930s and 1940s, resources were scare and the allocation of space within periodicals was limited. Consequently, as researchers we must be grateful for the citations and references which we are able to salvage under such unique circumstances. With these observations in mind, I would encourage you to refrain from deleting such useful reference citations in the days ahead. Respectfully Yours 72.69.152.90 (talk) 00:11, 29 August 2017 (UTC)JJ72.69.152.90 (talk) 00:18, 29 August 2017 (UTC)JJ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.69.152.90 (talk)

Does Who's Who claim Mohammad Asghar is an only child? edit

WHO’S WHO The article is Mohammad Asghar. The broad issue is a complicated and contentious edit request here. The narrow issue is whether "he was the only child" is correct. There is no citation at the end of that sentence, but the next sentence makes a reference to Who's Who which requires subscription. If someone has access to that document could they tell me whether or not it claims he is an only child? I have solid, but not citable evidence that this is incorrect. If the source doesn't make the claim, it's easy enough to remove but if the source does make the claim I'll have to think through what to do next. --S Philbrick(Talk) 15:49, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sphilbrick: Not immediately helpful, Im afraid, but I don't think WW is a WP:RS. It's the dead-tree equivalent of WP:UGC: They ask you about yourself, and then publish it. — fortunavelut luna 15:52, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that is helpful. I know from personal experience that there are some Who's Who knockoffs that are scammy but I thought this one was more legit. If they are a reliable source than I don't have to worry about a conflict — I can remove the claim that isn't supported by reliable source. --S Philbrick(Talk) 16:07, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vmavanti, have you tried asking Gyrofrog, who added that content? --Usernameunique (talk) 06:35, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Usernameunique and Vmavanti, my recollection is that my previous involvement was to split the content from Fred Jackson Jr. (which would've meant that the references came from an earlier version of that article). Judging from the edit history, this is not the case, but for the life of me I do not remember creating the content, nor having access to the cited sources. (I believe I had access via Highbeam (or similar) at that time, but I'd like to think that I would've tagged the references as such.) FYI: As I recall (not that that's worth much), Allmusic (at least to some extent) treated both individuals as the same person, and I strongly suspect the discographical details in Fred Jackson (saxophonist) (specifically, those from the 1970s onward) are about Fred Jackson Jr. For example, compare Fred Jackson's credits at Allmusic with Fred Jackson Jr.'s, scroll down to 1973 and notice where they overlap (I suppose it's possible, but I think highly unlikely, that both individuals appeared on the same recordings). I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.-- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:53, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: Well, I didn't access the articles via HighBeam nor Questia. I used to have access, but (having checked some old emails) it started about a year after the edits in question. My best guess is that these sources were formerly available on Google Books, or somewhere else on the web, and that I simply forgot to include the titles -- sorry about that. While my memory is fuzzy surrounding my earlier efforts, I can say with certainty that I never had direct access to the physical, print copies of these resources. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:02, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing that you are an experienced administrator, I'm taking the opportunity to ask for more help. I'm working on the Cleanup Listing for Wikiproject Jazz and there are many such problems to solve. Do you have any advice for me? For example, there are nineteen articles that have citations without titles, similar to the article I've mentioned. I've read the documentation about how to resolve these situations, but I'm still scratching my head. I've spent plenty of time in libraries and on the internet during my life, but some of these situations are like a needle in a haystack. Is deleting the existing citation and finding a new one an option? Or is that verboten?
Vmavanti (talk) 18:53, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Vmavanti: Embrace gradualism and eventualism as you tackle this important cleanup. If you find a better source, you may use it to replace a worse one, but do not delete a source simply because you haven't been able to complete the citation. There are links above to the content without the title (Google snippets) or the title without the content. There are libraries where both can be found together, and this is the right place to ask volunteers to seek them out. It may seem like a needle in a haystack, but we at the Resource Exchange have really big magnets. It may take weeks or months (there is a time and money cost to visiting certain libraries, so we may go only once we've built up a long enough to-do list to make it worthwhile), but we have a good record of obtaining sources eventually. --Worldbruce (talk) 21:17, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have that, and it seems very much the same, and oddly enough the printout has the same subtitle as the aforementioned article. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:21, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Drmies, it's available here. --Usernameunique (talk) 16:55, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Usernameunique, here's the fun thing: that's what I have but ILL delivered it to me with a cover page that identified it as published in the Jahrbuch! Drmies (talk) 17:49, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Drmies, yes, that's odd. It seems to have been published twice, once in Germany and once in Korea, but the reason for doing so is unclear. It's also available in its original paginated format by searching here. Maybe there's some relevant information somewhere on that website, but most of it is in Korean. --Usernameunique (talk) 18:20, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ha, same problem I had at work: it's unsafe for Firefox or something like that. Thanks!

Venad: Its Early History edit

{{Resolved}} Does anyone have access to K.K.Ramachandran Nair's journal article Venad: Its Early History (March 1987), specifically pages 24-29? It'll be useful for the article Ravivarman Kulashekhara.

It's hard to find online -- only snippets can be seen on Google Books. Hathi Trust Digital Library has a limited search, based on an original from University of California. -- utcursch | talk 16:22, 2 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Utcursch, got it. Email me and I'll send it on. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:25, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Utcursch, no problem! Got it via ILL; looks like it was in the University of Hawaii's collection. Some libraries closer by also have the journal, but not as far back as 1987. --Usernameunique (talk) 18:35, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Kges1901: Do you have page numbers/authors for these? ~ Rob13Talk 18:28, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BU Rob13: No, but snippets of the clippings can be found when searching "300th Cavalry Group" here. Kges1901 (talk) 19:35, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Without page numbers, I can't ask for these as scan and deliver via interlibrary loan, unfortunately. A search will need to be done on microfilm (if we can obtain microfilm). I'll try that via interlibrary loan, but chances of success are probably on the low side. ~ Rob13Talk 20:40, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone subscribe to Billboard? I need to know some boxscore data for a tour article. edit

Please ping me here or post on my user talk. Thanks.  — Calvin999 18:56, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Calvin999, there is some access to Billboard through online databases; what do you need? John M Baker (talk) 14:26, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you John M Baker. I was looking for Leg 2 of the All I Want for Christmas Is You, A Night of Joy and Festivity concerts. And also for the I Am Tour (Leona Lewis) please. I have others too but this would do for the time being.  — Calvin999 19:11, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Calvin999, for whatever reason, I've found that Google Books has older Billboard issues available for full view, so I'd recommend checking there too czar 02:33, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Calvin999, not sure exactly what you're looking for. Is there a part of the Billboard website you can point to that has the "boxscore" data that you're trying to access? --Usernameunique (talk) 19:01, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Calvin999, I still don't know what you mean. What part of the website contains this information? Can you include a link to the portion of the website that paywalls you? --Usernameunique (talk) 13:22, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Usernameunique I'm afraid I don't know what you mean either. Billboard Boxscore updates publically every week with the latest grosses, and the previous week becomes no longer visible. I posted here and many other places asking if anyone subscribes to Billboard so they could look up grosses from tours from a couple of years ago and subscribers can look at archives. Many people pinged back saying yes they do subscribe and they supplied me with the info I was looking for. 13:38, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks Calvin999, that clears it up. I didn't know that "Billboard Boxscore" was it's own separate part of the website. If you have everything that you need, let's mark this as {{resolved}}. --Usernameunique (talk) 14:24, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Greylock edit

I would like to work on cleaning up the sourcing of Mount_Greylock. I have a vague recollection that someone once told me Wikipedia has the ability to provide free access to newspapers.com which I think would be helpful in working on this. I also work on cleaning up references to other articles of this is not just a one-off request. Is my vague recollection correct? --S Philbrick(Talk) 15:33, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sphilbrick: Sign up for newspapers.com access at the new Library Card platform. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:50, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

'Pioneer of the Dutch Film Poster: Dolly Rudeman 1902-1980' by Paul van Yperen edit

{{resolved}} A link is here. I'm working on an English article for Dolly Rudman (it's here, in a very embryonic state! -which also demonstrates the paucity of sources in English general.) There's an article on the nl.wiki, but the machine translation is v poor. Any help appreciated :) --O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 17:41, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: What part of this book do you need? Note that we can't handle full book scans. We could send you a table of contents and allow you to choose where to go from there. ~ Rob13Talk 19:32, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks very much BU Rob13, got that- well. I don't really know; since it's something I have zero-knowledge on, I was thinking just a few pages covering relevant periods- early years, major works, later years. Something like that. Se, the article is never going to be much more than start class (by me anyway!) but it would be good to flesh it out a bit. How easy is it for you/s? O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 19:35, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: This book appears to be exceedingly rare. See WorldCat. The only two copies in the United States are in a university in New York (where it's part of a special collection - unlikely to be eligible for interlibrary loan) and a research institute in Los Angeles (unlikely to engage in interlibrary loan at all). I happen to be likely to travel close to one of those areas in the somewhat near future, so I'll see what I can do. This one will likely take a while, though. It could be as far away as summer before I manage it. ~ Rob13Talk 19:41, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much BU Rob13, that's very kind- but please don't bother. If it's as rare as that- WP:RSN probably? In any case, no point in going to that much trouble for something like this. Does Drmies do translations I wonder ;) *scratch chin* O Fortuna!...ImpFortuna Imperatrix Mundieratrix mundi. 19:56, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not right now, but remind me tomorrow or this weekend. Drmies (talk) 22:57, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Its definitely a reliable source. The reason it's so rare is that it was produced only to accompany one specific exhibition as a sort of extended program in a sense, from what I can tell. When the exhibition was finished, most copies were probably lost or destroyed. It doesn't appear it was ever publicly made available, so libraries didn't have a chance to grab it unless donated (as in the case of Binghamton). Certainly an interesting history attached to this item. ~ Rob13Talk 01:32, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of libraries in Chicago have the Dutch version. The entire book's only 71 pages including illustration, so maybe the biography section is a manageable length for copying/translation. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 02:35, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, forgot the Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi part. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 03:48, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BlackcurrantTea: thanks very much for the information. That errainly sounds more manageable than I expected- but it could still be a helluva translation project! Which I wouldn't expect anyone to undertake; the .nl article is one thing- <250 words- but that could be something else :o Thanks again though! O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 14:03, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely. I may get back to this later today--translating/paraphrasing that bit from that book is no big chore, and I'm going to leave the cleanup to you. :) Drmies (talk) 18:12, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Currently working on this. ~ Rob13Talk 23:15, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Sadly, not going to be able to do this one after all. The university I thought I could get access at holds this in their rare books section which has all sorts of restrictions on scanning texts. Sorry! ~ Rob13Talk 05:26, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BU Rob13: No problem. Thanks for trying- and more to the point, not forgetting! (unlike me). That's a common stumbling block of course, and one I'm somewhat surprised you don't encounter more often with all the esoterica you get asked for here  :) Take care, and thanks again. @Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi:   Sent - If you need some of the posters as a high-quality JPG, just ask. I bought the book, but don't care about preparing pictures.
