References for state routes edit

  Resolved

I am attempting to update articles on state routes throughout the United States (especially the states of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina), but I need resources that I can use for citations in the articles.
I have tried to search the Department of Transportation (DOT) for Florida and Georgia, but neither them nor Google has given much, if anything, for this kind of project.
The DOTs don't seem to have exhaustive (if any, at all) information on the state routes (at least, on their websites). If someone could help, that would be great. I am looking for articles, photos, or any other useable information. Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 23:47, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the issues from 2007 to the present are available free on their website.[2] You can try emailing the editor at: redakcja@wydplek.com.pl It appears to be ISSN 0033-2240 A very small number of libraries carry it but I'm not sure how many of those carry recent issues. My library has it in the catalog, but only issues from the 19th century! GabrielF (talk) 21:37, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The 19th century issues would be Series 1, not 2. You might alternatively try the corresponding author at this address. The NLM holdings include that issue, so someone there could look it up, or in the British Library. LeadSongDog come howl! 18:22, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've uploaded four of the articles: [8], [9], [10], [11]. Please let me know when you've downloaded successfully and I'll remove the links. I am having some trouble locating the 1980 University of Adelaide doctoral dissertation: "Ecology of the Kangaroo Island wallaby, Macropus eugenii (Desmarest), in Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island" by Robert W. Inns. OCLC 222751239 It doesn't appear to be in the ProQuest Thesis & Dissertation database. GabrielF (talk) 00:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As listed here, Inns' thesis is held on paper in the university library of the University of Adelaide. Perhaps someone in category:Wikipedians in Adelaide or at Wikipedia:WikiProject Adelaide would help with some legwork. Failing that, you might email the library (library adelaide.edu.au) to ask about getting a copy, but it is 190 pages. LeadSongDog come howl! 05:16, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's shaping up, but I think maybe it should resemble other Wikipedia articles about related projects like Wikibooks or Wikinews a little more, (even though it is an article about an associated project, it still needs some bits of referencing). Shearonink (talk) 19:47, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a bit more edits and I believe I have a stub ready. Could someone see if they could help me find a few references for it? Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:48, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually having a lot of trouble with this one. "Wikimedia Incubator" has 379,000 hits on Google. Screening by domain, I see that 330,000 of those are hits to websites owned by the Wikimedia Foundation or Wikia. Perusing through the remaining 49,000, all I see for page after page are mirrors of those same sites, with a handful of unaffiliated sties that wouldn't count as RS "Wikimedia incubator" -site:wikibooks.org -site:wikia.com -site:wiktionary.org -site:wikiquote.org -site:wikiversity.org -site:wikimedia.org -site:wikipedia.org -site:wikinews.org -site:mediawiki.org. What action should I take if there are no reliable sources available? --Nathan2055talk - contribs 16:50, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If no reliable sources exist, then the topic isn't notable, and should at most just be an entry in a list of Wikimedia projects. It should only have an article when that is no longer true, or when someone proves me wrong by finding some good sources. Someguy1221 (talk) 17:53, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Book: Mülinen, Egbert Friedrich von, 1908: Beiträge zur Kenntnis des Karmels edit

Does anyone (eg in Germany) have access to the 1908 book by Egbert Friedrich von Mülinen: Beiträge zur Kenntnis des Karmels "Separateabdruck aus der Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palëstina-Vereins Band XXX (1907) Seite 117-207 und Band XXXI (1908) Seite 1-258." ?

The book is not in any library in my country. It is available at archive.org, but the problem is that the pictures that I am interested in are not available. (See p. 282, 292-293. I would be very grateful if someone could get hold of a hard-copy of the book, scan the pictures and upload them to wikipedia. Regards, Huldra (talk) 22:06, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

William Howard Taft: An Intimate History by Judith Icke Anderson edit

  Resolved

Does anyone know where I can get a free online copy of this book? Thank you. Futurist110 (talk) 08:03, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The book's description contains a note that it was based on the author's doctoral thesis at UCLA. I've uploaded the thesis here. Since the book was published in 1981 and is still in copyright I don't think there's a way to get a free copy online. However, if there are particular chapters or pages that you need it shouldn't be too difficult to get scans. GabrielF (talk) 15:31, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How long will this book's copyright last? Futurist110 (talk) 00:29, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I just clicked on your link. It appears that the contents of this whole book are there. I have a question--is it legal for me to download her thesis, as long as it is for personal use only? Also, are there any differences between her thesis and this book? Thank you. Futurist110 (talk) 02:51, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The book's copyright will last 70 years after the death of the author - probably well beyond our lifetimes. Yes, I know that's ridiculous. I would imagine that there are significant differences between the thesis and the book - she finished the thesis in 1973 and published her book in 1981. I have no idea what those differences are. Your question about the legality of downloading her thesis is a somewhat tricky point and, as I'm not a lawyer, I really don't know precisely. The thesis is in an academic database (ProQuest Theses & Dissertations). My institution pays a subscription to access this database, so it is perfectly legal for me to download the thesis. The point where things get a little tricky is whether I can share it with you. ProQuest's Terms and Conditions of use state the following:

You and your Authorized Users may provide to a third party colleague minimal, insubstantial amounts of materials retrieved from the Products for personal use or scholarly, educational or scientific research use in hard copy or electronically, provided that in no case any such sharing is done in a manner or magnitude as to act as a replacement for the recipient's or recipient institution's own subscription to either the Products or the purchase of the underlying Work.

I believe that by sharing a small number of articles to users who are engaged in scholarly and educational work (namely writing and editing an encyclopedia) and who do not otherwise have access to these databases, I am not abusing these terms and conditions. I don't believe you can purchase this thesis, so the last clause wouldn't apply here, but you can see why scanning a few pages or a chapter would be less problematic than scanning a whole book. GabrielF (talk) 04:03, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, Gabriel. I will download this thesis since it appears to be okay for me to do so. I will also look over this thesis (or at least parts of it) and see if there is anything in it that I could use anywhere on Wikipedia. Forgive me for asking, but I'm just curious--what institution are you attending right now? Again, thank you very much for downloading this thesis and posting it here. Ancient Varanasi: An Archaeological Perspective edit

  Resolved

Here is the book I am interested in: [17]. I am improving the Varanasi article, and there are a lot of unreliable references claiming different (often implausibly old) dates for how long Varanasi has existed. I'd like to find out what archaeologists have to say about this, and this book seems to be the most recent reliable source to answer this question. It's not available online, though, and buying it through amazon would be $70! It looks like pages v and 21 may have interesting info, based on Google snippet view. Obviously you can't email a book, but either scanning interesting pages or adding well-sourced info to Varanasi would be great. Thanks so much! This appears to be a German-language journal. Your best bet might be to ask our counterparts at the German Wikipedia [29]. GabrielF (talk) 14:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two questions: 1) How do I get to the German wikipedia and ask them and 2) Is their any way to get a German-language journal translated into English? I saw the abstract in English and I've seen papers do it in two languages before but in case it isn't I'd like to know if their is some way of doing that. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 16:32, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On most Wikipedia pages, the bar to the left shows a list under "Languages" of links to similar articles in other languages. This page (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request) lists only one such link, to the German Wikipedia page (de:Wikipedia:Bibliotheksrecherche/Anfragen), labled simply as "Deutsch". While it is generally best to avoid posting on a wiki in languages other than they normally use, there is some flexibility for requests such as this, and English is widely understood. The Astronomy of Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344) edit

  Resolved

I'm trying to source this quote in article "Gersonides" which describes the Jacob's staff. As I wrote on the talk page, the quote is apparently from Gersonides himself, extracted from the section of his book on astronomy, which, unlike the rest of his book, has only been published once, in The Astronomy of Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344) (ISBN 9783540961321). The relevant quote should be in Chapters 4–11, which are said to describe the Jacob's staff. I assume the index (table of contents linked) can help in finding the quote. I would also like, if possible, a scan of the original Hebrew quote (see table of contents). Here is the quote:

…of a staff of 4.5 feet (1.4 m) long and about one inch (2.5 cm) wide, with six or seven perforated tablets which could slide along the staff, each tablet being an integral fraction of the staff length to facilitate calculation, used to measure the distance between stars or planets, and the altitudes and diameters of the Sun, Moon and stars.

With greatest gratitude to the volunteers here,

הסרפד (call me “Hasirpad) (formerly R——bo) 05:28, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That quote was merged into the article back in 2005 from [32], which linked http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Levi.html as the source, but somehow that got lost in the merge. Hope it helps.LeadSongDog come howl! 22:35, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting, thank you—the article linked implies (but does not state outright) that the quote is from Gersonides' book, the Wars of the Lord, as I thought; I am still interested in the original, of course.

There might (with some luck) also be something in Planets, Potions, and Parchments: Scientifica Hebraica from the Dead Sea ... By B. Barry Levy, Jewish Public Library (Montréal, Québec), David M. Stewart Museum. ISBN 9780773507913. LeadSongDog come howl! 22:19, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but the quote is sourced online here as being from the Book of the Wars of the Lord, and that source is clearly not a Wikipedia mirror. Nothing but Bernard Goldstein's translation (the only translation of Book 5, Part 1) will do. הסרפד (call me Hasirpad) (formerly R——bo) 23:59, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Goldstein's translation and original Arabic, by mail. FallingGravity (talk) 03:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, received, the Hebrew translation indeed corresponds to the English text—but neither correspond to the quote, unless the quote is a very free paraphrase. Are you sure that no other passage matches the quote more closely? If not, then the source of the quote remains as mysterious as ever.
Looking at the chapter commentary for Chapter 8, it seems that the sent text is on Levi's "second version of the Jacob Staff with fixed legs". The quote might refer to the first version of the staff described in Chapter 7, in which we are instructed to make a staff 6 spans long (about 1.5 m) and 1 digit wide (about 2 cm) [measurements that roughly equate to the quote's]. FallingGravity (talk) 05:35, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that sounds more like it (though perhaps the "quote" is a composite paraphrase, beginning in Chapter 7 and continuing in Chapter 8). Can you send me that part? Thank you. הסרפד (call me Hasirpad) (formerly R——bo) 05:47, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sent. FallingGravity (talk) 00:48, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like my theory was wrong—the quote is definitely based on the Book of the Wars of the Lord, but doesn't exactly match any particular passage. Too bad. הסרפד (call me Hasirpad) (formerly R——bo) 01:09, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper stories from 1911 Oklahoma edit

  Resolved

I'm wondering whether anyone has access to a good news database that might include the following. It's for Lynching of Laura and Lawrence Nelson.

  1. Front page of the Okemah Ledger, 25 May 1911; I believe the headline was "Lynchers Avenge the Murder of Geo. Loney, The Nelson Woman and Her Boy are Taken from the County Jail by Unknown Parties and Swung from Bridge Across North Canadian".
  2. The Omekah Independent, Vol. 7, No. 36, 25 May 1911: "Woman and Boy Lynched, A Mob Enters the County Jail Last Night and Take two Negro Prisoners Whom They Hang from a Bridge".
  3. The Daily Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, Friday, 26 May 1911: "Woman Lynched by Side of Son, Okfuskee County Mob Takes Double Revenge for Officer's Death, Bridge is Gallows." That one appears to be available here, though I don't know whether this is the whole story.
  4. Tulsa World, 26 May 1911: "Mother and Son are Lynched at Okeemah, jailor is surprised and bodies later found dangling from a bridge". Note: "Okeemah" could be a typo made by the secondary source, or it could be in the original headline.

Any of these would be extremely helpful. SlimVirgin (talk) 03:58, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chaplin & Nixon (1939) edit

  Resolved

I am interested in the paper The Problem of Ancillary Power Services on Aircraft presented to the Royal Aeronautical Society by Chaplin and Nixon in 1939. The journal Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, Vol. 11 Iss: 3 may contain the paper. If possible, may I see the contents page of that journal too? --Senra (talk) 18:03, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The presentation was discussed in this Flight article. Hope it helps.LeadSongDog come howl! 20:11, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed is was discussed in Flight. That is where I first saw it. I was looking for the published article though. Is it available in Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, Vol. 11 Iss: 3? --Senra (talk) 20:34, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It seems not. That article just lists the upcoming talk on the 30th of that month on its agenda, as did earlier Flight issues. However, I suggest Chaplin & Nixon's paper in the Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society vol.43 December 1939 would seem promising. It is searchable but not readable on Hathitrust. It looks as if the paper is pp942-990. That paper was in turn cited at: A. D. Hodgson "Civil Air Transport Communication" Proceedings of the Wireless Section, Institution of Electrical Engineers vol 15 iss 45 September 1940 (which is how I found it), saying "The problem of electrical power supply on aircraft is one of the most difficult, particularly where the radio interests are concerned. The subject of power supply in general has been dealt with in the paper by Messrs. Chaplin and Nixon {Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, December, 1939)." LeadSongDog come howl! 21:56, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I will ask my local library for a copy. Thank you for your help --Senra (talk) 23:40, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfamiliar abbreviation in citation edit

  Resolved

If anyone has the time, I'd appreciate some help in understanding a citation that contains an abbreviation I'm not familiar with. The citation as I found it here reads roughly:

  • J. Raspi-Serra: "Contributo allo studio di alcune sculture dell’abbazia di Sant’Antimo", Commentari, n.s. 15, [1964] pp. 135-165.

What does "n.s." mean here? Oh, and if anyone can easily see a copy of the article itself I'd be very pleased to read it, I've drawn a blank. But please do not go to great trouble, I have already accessed the abbreviated translation of the article published two years later. Thanks in advance, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:02, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In this case, I think n.s. means new series, meaning that the journal was published previously under the same name in a different form but was then recreated in a new form. GabrielF (talk) 01:03, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This seems to match "Commentari : revista di critica e storia dell'arte" published by De Luca in Rome. My library catalogue says "Some volumes also called new series". Alas we only have volumes later than the one requested. Zerotalk 02:20, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for both replies, which have helped me to understand the citation and trace the publication. "N.s." does indeed stand for "Nuova serie" or new series in this case. I'd got as far as "no series" as a possibility, but couldn't see why anyone would write that. Thanks again, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:16, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
